CBLT Welcomes New Staff!
The Crested Butte Land Trust is excited to welcome Jess Forbes, our new Development and Outreach Coordinator, to the team!

Jess has been in the Gunnison Valley since 2015 and comes with a background in outdoor education and ecological research. As an avid recreationalist, Gunnison Valley has been the perfect place for Jess to grow her roots - any chance she gets, she is on her skis, her bike, or outside with her pup. Jess is passionate about instilling curiosity and connections to her natural environment and is excited to join the CBLT team!

Keep an eye out for our friendly river stewards this summer! In partnership with the Slate River Working Group, we’re excited to bring on board two river stewards this summer: Tyler Grimes and Maria Skarzynski!

Starting May 15 through August 16, these river steward rockstars will be stationed at the Gunsight Bridge and Rec Path Bridge during peak river use times to monitor recreation traffic, help educate river users, and remind folks of the voluntary no-float period to respect the Great Blue Heron Rookery.
Both Tyler and Maria are Western alum and bring enthusiasm and passion for the outdoors and helping to find balance between recreation and habitat protection. A special thanks goes to the Sustainable Tourism & Outdoor Recreation (STOR) Committee and the Town of Crested Butte for helping to fund this successful program.

Long Lake Etiquette

The Long Lake trailhead is starting to melt out and as we all dream of taking a dip in the lake this summer, we at the Land Trust wanted to offer some friendly etiquette reminders for recreating in the area. This spring, the Long Lake Management Committee will be working to identify official trails and provide clear wayfinding, as well as close off undesignated trails to prevent further erosion and begin re-vegetation. As we continue to identify and work on short and long-term solutions for Long Lake, we ask the community to help us keep this special place, special.

  • Stay on designated trails and tread lightly.
  • Respect private property and working grazing lands.
  • Park in designated parking areas.
  • Pack out whatever you bring.
  • Please no e-bikes, motorbikes, or motor boats.
  • No camping or campfires.
  • Recreate at your own risk, and remember to bring a PFD.
  • Keep dogs on leash or under strict voice control.
  • Please be prepared to clean up after your pets.
  • Please give the wildlife plenty of space and respect. No hunting is allowed. Standard Colorado Parks and Wildlife fishing regulations apply.

Trail Conditions Update
Photo Credit: Peter Hogan, May 12

As warm and sunny days become visible on the horizon, please remember that many trails in the valley are still covered in snow or mud. Check out Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association’s trail report before getting out there for a hike or a ride.

We are excited to share that Lower Loop along with Lupine 1 and 2 are open! Other trails still needs some time, so please stay tuned, as recreating now can damage our trails.
