1. Updates from April 2021 GEM Steering Committee Meeting

From: Vania Jordanova (vania(at)lanl.gov)

Dear GEM colleagues and friends,

The GEM Steering Committee (SC) had a virtual meeting on April 6, 2021; the full minutes from the meeting will be posted on the GEM Wiki, brief updates are provided below.

We are proceeding with the organization of the GEM Summer 2021 Workshop as a fully virtual meeting during the week of July 25-30, 2021. A decision was made to have a small registration fee to help cover the costs of the meeting and to support family grants. A subcommittee was formed to organize the plenary sessions. We envision a program that celebrates GEM 30th anniversary; please send us ideas on how to make this a memorable event, although we realize the big celebration will be once we meet in person!

The GEM SC reviewed all applications received for the At-Large Member search. It is my pleasure to announce that Ian Cohen was selected; please join me in welcoming him as the new At-Large Member of the GEM SC.

The first GEM Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) happy hour was held on April 1. Several great ideas were raised and will be distilled into more formal action items by the DEI subcommittee. We plan to have next DEI happy hour together with CEDAR within a month and hope to see many of you there.

The SC continues the search for a new GEM Logo; please submit entries to the meeting organizers (MOs) Chia-Lin (chia-lin.huang at unh.edu) and Chris (Chris.Mouikis at unh.edu). A competition will be conducted by the SC to reward the winning design.

Hope everyone is healthy and doing well. Please contact us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
2. NSF Grand Challenges in Integrative Geospace Sciences Solicitation

From: Lisa Winter (lwinter(at)nsf.gov)

Colleagues,

We would like to call your attention to a new NSF geospace solicitation, ""Grand Challenges in Integrative Geospace Sciences: Advancing National Space Weather Expertise and Research toward Societal Resilience"" (ANSWERS). This funding opportunity supports transformative understanding of the integrated Sun-Earth system as well as solar and terrestrial drivers of space weather and their effects “from Sun to mud,” along with forward-looking educational endeavors and diverse partnerships. The ANSWERS solicitation seeks research questions that go beyond the scope of each of the long-standing NSF Geospace funding opportunities (Aeronomy, CEDAR, GEM, Magnetospheric Physics, and Solar Terrestrial Research).

ANSWERS proposals are due August 23, 2021. For details, please refer to the solicitation at:
https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2021/nsf21577/nsf21577.htm

NSF Geospace program officers expect to offer two virtual office hours in mid-May to share information and respond to questions from potential proposers.

Sincerely,
Lisa Winter, Alan Liu, Ilia Roussev, and Mangala Sharma

3. Resolute Bay ISR Change in Planned Operations

From: Roger Varney (roger.varney(at)sri.com)

Dear Geospace Community,

We are announcing a significant change to the planned availability of science operations of the Resolute Bay Incoherent Scatter Radars, RISR-N and RISR-C. Due the failure of power generation equipment at the Resolute Bay Observatory, we are suspending all high-duty-cycle science operations from February 2021 until late 2021. We are currently working to install new power generation equipment at the Resolute Bay Observatory in fall 2021, and this new equipment will enable significantly more flexible and sustainable operations of both radars starting in late 2021. We are planning a major operations campaign during winter 2021-2022 utilizing the new equipment, and users curious about the new capabilities or with ideas for experiments during this campaign are encouraged to contact us. We are pursuing solutions that may allow for limited low-duty-cycle operations of RISR-N in summer 2021.

The repair and installation plans are subject to multiple contingencies, including those related to COVID-19 and associated travel restrictions, that may force delays beyond the scheduled dates. The AMISR Science Advisory Committee met in March 2021 to discuss and endorse this plan.

Sincerely,

Roger H. Varney

4. Helio2050 Pre-Workshop Discussion on Data Science Continues - April 19

From: Ryan McGranaghan (ryan.mcgranaghan(at)gmail.com)

Dear Colleagues,

The Heliophysics 2050 Workshop is quickly approaching (May 3-7), and we are convening pre-workshop discussions to make sure the community is being heard to guide the field over the next three decades.

Our pre-workshop discussion on the theme of 'Heliophysics Data Science' will continue Monday April 19 at 3 PM EST. The goal of these sessions is to synthesize the scientific priorities in this field and discuss ways in which data science can contribute to transformational research across Helio and Earth sciences.

Please feel welcome to drop in as you can, even if you cannot attend the entire session. We strongly encourage asynchronous contribution as a way to be more inclusive, so please add your thoughts on the topics (or add new topics) at any time (https://tinyurl.com/helio2050-ds).

Pre-registration is requested at this link (https://forms.gle/fnaBFU56SNmBmSQL9), from which a Zoom link will be provided.

The structure of this meeting will be to review comments on the TOPICS and to develop a vision.

Looking forward,
Ryan McGranaghan on behalf of

5. Helio2050 Pre-Session 2: Heliophysics Community Discussions

From: Lindsay Goodwin (lindsay.v.goodwin(at)njit.edu)

Dear Colleagues,

In preparation for the approaching Heliophysics 2050 Workshop (May 3-7), a series of workshop discussions related to the state of the heliophysics community/profession will be held. These sessions are meant to guide our thinking during the workshop and beyond (over the next three decades), as well as focus the efforts of the heliophysics sub-communities who typically do not have an open dialog with each other. The results of these discussions will be available for the heliophysics community at large.

After the first session, we decided to change our original plan and hold two sessions before Helio2050 and one or two after Helio2050. The second meeting (the last one before the workshop), will be held Wednesday 4/28 from 2:30 - 4pm Eastern Time (we can go beyond 4 pm, if the need arises). This session will be open to all members of the heliophysics community. Please feel free to attend all or part of the session.

Pre-registration is required here (a meeting link will be provided in the future): https://forms.gle/9hqnxVUzVHGydzC7A

Please feel free to pass this email to interested parties.

Best,
Lindsay Goodwin (lindsay.v.goodwin(at)njit.edu) and Jaye Verniero (jlverniero(at)berkeley.edu)
