Fencing around Properties
The council recently received a message from a local commoner about a pony that suffered serious injury after it became caught in a domestic fence. We would remind people to check and keep their fencing in reasonable condition to prevent injury to Forest stock.
For houses bordering the open Forest it is the home owner’s responsibility to fence against Forest livestock and keep their boundaries safe. If a Forest animal gets into your property you may be held liable by its owner if it suffers any injury or illness as a result. If the animal damages your garden you cannot claim against the owner. Please Click HERE to see the Verderer’s Guidance for Property Owners for more information.
Request to stop feeding New Forest Livestock
The Official Verderer ( Lord Manners ) has warned that members of the public and equestrians are putting New Forest livestock at risk by feeding them hay. Lord Manners reissued a plea not to feed Forest animals in any circumstances ' feeding such small quantities of fodder encourages ponies to fight for the meagre offering or hang around hoping for more instead of foraging naturally.' Further he said that 'members of the public, including residents , should never feed the Forest animals or put out on the Forest anything which the stock may eat'. This follows the case earlier this year of a pony dying after was fed carrots and another which fell ill and required treatment after eating a pie left at Cadman cricket ground.
Some of you may have seen Kathy Clarke on South Today last week talking about this and the commoners campaign to raise awareness to try and prevent people feeding ponies . There is now a petition to try and make the feeding of New Forest ponies and livestock a criminal offence.

Last week there were two van break-in's in the village and tools of significant value were taken from both. We would therefore urge all parishioners to be vigilant
Burn Better
From 1 May, new laws came into effect regarding the sale of coal, wood, and manufactured solid fuels. The government are phasing out two of the most polluting fuels, traditional house coal and wet wood. These changes are to help improve air quality and promote good practice in wood and solid fuel burning in order to reduce pollution.
Choose ‘Ready to Burn’ labelled wood and solid fuel to prepare for the new rules.

Parking on Verges
With increasing visitors to the area parishioners are reminded that parking on verges erodes and damages the Forest and so please park in official car parks or within your own property. For more information Click HERE
Reduce your plastic use
Are you using coronavirus testing kits and want to offset the plastic use? Everyone is now able to do regular home-testing for coronavirus as an important part of reducing the spread of coronavirus - for more information Click HERE
The tests necessarily use plastic, but if you want to off-set this plastic use, now is a good time to consider some everyday swaps. You could:
- use bars of soap, for hand washing, showering, and shampooing
- buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than in plastic packaging
- remember your bags when you go shopping
- use reusable food wraps instead of cling film
- say no to a straw if you can drink from the cup
- take your own refillable coffee cup or water bottle when you go out
- shop local where you can. This will support local business and producers, who may have been impacted by the pandemic, as well as reducing the ‘food miles’ and your travel. You could also research nearby shops that use local products and suppliers, are carbon neutral, or aim towards zero waste.
|
We know that making these swaps is not always easy but even if you can change one single-use plastic behaviour in your household you will be helping to off-set the plastic in the tests.
For alternatives to single-use plastics Click HERE
Join the New Forest Spring Clean
28 May to 13 June is the New Forest Spring Clean.
Discarded litter spoils our local communities and environment and threatens to harm wildlife and the Forest’s free roaming animals.
We all have a shared responsibility to keep our surroundings clean and tidy. If you agree and want to be a litter hero, why not get involved with a clean-up? Whether you want to litter pick at your local neighbourhood, park, beach or forest, you’ll be helping look out for the New Forest by keeping your area clean and safe.
- Organise a group litter pick – NFDC can lend equipment, like litter pickers and hi vis vests, for up to 30 volunteers. NFDC also supply rubbish sacks and arrange to collect the litter after your group’s litter pick. Find out more Click HERE
- Families and individuals – you can get free litter picking equipment and advice on your clean up, when you sign up as a New Forest Ambassador Click HERE
If you do take part in or organise litter picking, personal safety must always come first. Follow this guidance to make sure you and your volunteers stay safe on your litter pick.
Carefully consider where you plan to litter pick, be aware of any hazards in the area, and ensure all volunteers are aware of safety advice. For the NFDC Health & Safety Guidance for community litter picking Click HERE
