Invitation: Join Land is Life & partners at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

Starting today through April 30th, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) twentieth session begins with the theme: “Peace, justice and strong institutions: the role of indigenous peoples in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 16”. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, session meetings and side events will take place in a hybrid format mostly virtual.

You can watch the sessions live at UN WebTv

Along with partner indigenous organizations from several regions of the world, Land is Life has prepared a set of special open activities to accompany and inform the discussions that will take place at the Forum. You are absolutely welcome to join us!

April 28 - 11:00AM ET: Self-determination and recovery experiences of Indigenous Peoples from the Amazon facing COVID-19
The efforts of Indigenous Peoples from the Amazon basin to confront the pandemic have focused on addressing the historical neglect by States, building their responses in the construction of autonomous initiatives based on the right to self-determination, the right to lands and territories and traditional knowledge and practices, that have allowed Indigenous organizations to face the crisis unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic in better conditions.

Faced with persistent and diversified risks of the COVID-19 pandemic for Indigenous Peoples living in the Amazon, it is necessary to promote an international debate about the recovery initiatives and experiences that have been implemented autonomously during the pandemic, and the lessons to be learned from Indigenous resilience in order to build back better and ensure a different future.

Co-organized with the National Organization of Indigenous Peoples from the colombian Amazon (OPIAC); Native Federation of the Madre de Dios River and Tributaries (FENAMAD), Perú; and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE).

April 29 - 11:00AM ET: Indigenous Peoples Human Rights & Security Situation in Asia
At present, many Asian States are taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to further repress civil liberties, intensify attacks against indigenous peoples, and worsen development aggression. Across Asia, there is a growing trend of criminalization and political persecution against Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Defenders (IPHRDs) and indigenous organizations that remain relentless in their struggle to defend lands, territories, and ways of life.

As the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues convenes this month, it is opportune to place the discourse on peace and justice for Indigenous Peoples in the context of addressing the root causes of conflict and insecurity in order to attain just and lasting peace, coherent with the right to self-determination.
Co-organized by Land is Life, the International Indigenous Peoples Movement for Self Determination and Liberation (IPMSDL) and the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP).
