PASA's mission is to help close persistent opportunity gaps by expanding and improving quality
after school, summer and other out of school time learning opportunities for all the youth of Providence by organizing a sustainable public-private partnership that contributes to student success
and serves as a national model.

Guiding Youth Towards A Stronger Resilience

A recent New York Times article about the mental health needs of youth aligns brilliantly with what we have been addressing all year and with our summer plans to get youth back together socializing, exploring the outdoors, getting physically active, and making, doing and playing together to regain their childhoods. We are excited for our summer programs - an AfterZone Adventure Camp in Roger Williams Park and a Hub Summer Camp for high school youth on a Providence college campus.

When youth can heal and learn in-person, they will be better prepared to re-engage in life and at school.  They may prove to be more resilient and adaptable than us adults, which is why our entire team works so hard to support one another so we can then help adolescents.

After the superb facilitation of our PASA Arts Event conversation with Ethan Hawke and Joe Wilson Jr., Genesis Sanchez Tavarez' employer Proskauer Rose LLP wrote a brief summary about her role in the virtual event. The article helps illustrate, through Genesis' experience, how PASA's mission provides a caring community and meaningful experiences so youth can thrive and collectively have inspiring high quality learning experiences together. Our event re-cap page has the complete article as well as the recording of the dynamic conversation between Hawke and Wilson if you were unable to join us.

I'm so proud that our team has served over 500 youth this year. While we are used to working with many more youth in person, it is significant that we have maintained close contact with so many throughout a year of lockdown, continuing to connect with youth and families as we all worked diligently to support one another during a stressful year.

Looking forward to a strong and healthy spring and summer season for everyone,

Hillary Salmons
Executive Director

A New Voice for Providence Public Schools (a recent PASA Hub alum!)

We are so proud of Ty'Relle Stephens, who was voted onto the Providence School Board in March. Ty'Relle was very active in the Hub, serving on the Student Advisory Team and working as one of the summer program counselors.

Our PASA team fondly remembers Ty'relle's presence in the JSEC building. He always seemed to know what was happening and his energy and passion filled the room in meetings. You could always count on him to share his thoughts or speak to a crowd. The running joke was that he would one day be Mayor of Providence!
In a recent conversation with PASA Executive Director Hillary Salmons, Ty'Relle said that the PASA leadership training helped him feel better prepared and respected as the youngest School Board member.  Many of the skills he now employs in that role - public speaking, presentation delivery, and how to work collaboratively as an advocate for better schools - he learned while participating in PASA programming.

Ty'Relle's success illustrates the value of out-of-school time experiences for youth. Opportunities  like the ones Ty'Relle had show youth what success in life looks like and gives them the tools and responsibilities to problem-solve and make a contribution in their communities.

We congratulate Ty'Relle on his appointment and we applaud his passion and determination to represent all of the students of Providence in his new role.
