Basehor-Linwood families,

As we near the end of the school year, we want to remind everyone that yesterday, April 21st, was our last Remote Wednesday for the school year, as we were able to finish up most state assessments for our remote students and interventions taking place on Remote Wednesdays. To be clear, all Wednesdays in May will be on-site days! (Full-time remote students will continue to stay full-time remote.)

Families who are using a District hotspot for remote Wednesdays need to please return the hotspot in the original box to the District Office (2008 N. 155th St., Basehor, KS) as soon as possible after Wednesday, April 21st. If you have full-time remote students at home and are still utilizing the hotspot, please return after the last day of school.

In addition, as mentioned in Mr. Howard’s Superintendent’s Report at last week’s board meeting, we have moved the LAST DAY for students to May 27th, and it will be a full school day, with teachers having a full workday on Friday, May 28th.

Thank you for your continued patience and support of the Basehor-Linwood School District as we finish out this school year! If you have any questions, please contact your building secretary!

BLMS 7th grader Addilynn Davison and BLHS junior Joshua Hilfiker volunteer with the Basehor-Linwood Assistance Services food pantry nearly each Thursday evening. They are responsible for putting food away, checking dates on donated goods, and filling out orders.

Davison says she began volunteering because of a 5th grade trip she took with her Student Council group to the BLAS food pantry to help pack supplies for those in need. She reached out herself to see if they needed help, and now says that as long as she is free on Thursday evenings, she volunteers her time.

Hilfiker began volunteering with the food pantry in February of 2020, and plans to continue throughout his high school career if he can. He initially began volunteering with BLAS to get service hours for college and National Honor Society.

“I volunteer at BLAS to help others in my community that are in need, and the thing that keeps me coming back is seeing the people I help smile when I give them their essential items,” Hilfiker said. “Also, the people that run BLAS are super awesome.”

“These kids are amazing,” says Glenda Briscoe, BLAS Chairperson. “They could run the food pantry by themselves!”

Basehor-Linwood Assistance Services (BLAS) is an organization which provides a variety of emergency services for residents of the Basehor-Linwood School District. Recently, BLAS was able to purchase materials to expand the food pantry into part of the garage, and it now has heating and cooling, as well, thanks to labor provided by several volunteers from Basehor United Methodist Church. You can stop by to donate or pick up needed goods at 18660 158th Street in Basehor on Thursdays from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., or call 913.724.2077 to make an appointment for a donation drop off at another time.

Mr. Kyle Moore, sponsor of the Black Leaders of America organization at Piper High School, came to speak to BLHS student athletes after school Wednesday. Mr. Moore's message was about relationships and embracing everyone. He discussed creating conversation about uncomfortable topics and having the willingness to reach out and become friends with those who aren't in our "circle of friends" comfort zone.

Basehor-Linwood Early Learning Center celebrated the Week of the Young Child last week with special community readers, an art walk, and special events each day of the week:

Music Monday - families were encouraged to join a Google Meet dance party featuring kids' favorite songs from class!

Tasty Tuesday - Students could engage in a fun rainbow toast cooking activity showcased by Mrs. Debbie.

Work Together Wednesday - Families were encouraged to join Mr. Patrick from the Basehor Community Library LIVE via Zoom for a fun pajama party.

Artsy Thursday - Students and their parents could visit the outdoor ART WALK and visit the outdoor BOOK FAIR!

Funday Friday - Families are encouraged to play together outside or even by building a fort inside!

The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life.
