This week in sports, Sacramento State's women's basketball team announced former assistant women's basketball coach for the Oregon Ducks as its pick for new head coach. The Hornet baseball team found a ray of hope after they won their final game against Seattle University, putting a positive spin on an overall losing weekend. Sac State women’s basketball makes splash hire of Mark Campbell

Mark Campbell, former assistant coach of women’s basketball for the University of Oregon has been named the new head coach of Sac State’s women’s basketball team. During Campbell’s tenure with Oregon, he helped lead the Ducks to several accolades, including maintaining a top-10 seed in the west for 5 seasons.
“It is an honor to be named the next head coach for Sacramento State’s women’s basketball program,” Campbell said in a Hornet Athletics press release. “I’m looking forward to working with each of [the players], my staff and the department as we work hard to build a championship culture.”

Sac State baseball snaps 3-game losing streak, salvages series versus Seattle University

After three consecutive defeats, the Hornet baseball team managed to secure a win in the last game of their series run against Seattle University at John Smith Field on Sunday, with a final score of 11-4. The victory was a welcome one for Sac State's players, who were kept scoreless for the first 24 innings of the series.
“We came into today knowing we need to focus on today and not worry about yesterday, and once we scored that one run, that elephant got off our backs,” catcher Dawsen Bacho said postgame.

Freshman golfer Jennifer Koga is making a quick name for herself as a top competitor at Sac State, having been awarded "Freshman of the Year" as well as "Player of the Year" by Big Sky Conference in their announcement made on Friday. Koga is the third woman to be given both titles in the same season, another being fellow teammate Tess Blair. If Koga maintains her scoring average this season, she will be on track to break Sac State's all-time single-season record, which was also set by Blair last year, according to Sac State Athletics.
Though Koga was initially unsure of how she would rank among her teammates due to her unique playing style, her performance in the first season of her college career has proven that she is able to harness her talents to achieve great accolades.
"I was just able to walk on to these tournaments with the utmost confidence that I could produce a good score, and even if I’m not the longest hitter I can still get low scores,” Koga said in a profile with The State Hornet.
