Statement of Support to Community Members of Minoritized Backgrounds


In light of the continuous occurrence of events
that are especially harmful to individuals and communities from different minority backgrounds, the Linguistics Department firmly stands in solidarity with the minority members of our community. We denounce the hateful incidents that tragically continue to grow in number and, as they grow,
so does our resolve to stand by all minority students, faculty and staff in our department, institution
and society.

Chia-Wen Lo Successfully Defends Dissertation

Congratulations to Chia-Wen Lo, who successfully defended her dissertation, “Testing low-frequency neural oscillations in sentence understanding,” on Tuesday, April 13. Committee members include Jon Brennan (chair), Natasha Abner, Nai Ding, and Rick Lewis. Congratulations, Chia-Wen!

Paper by Yushi Sugimoto Published in Studia Linguistica

A paper by Yushi Sugimoto titled “Labeling Defective T*” was recently published in Studia Linguistica. The paper “proposes a new analysis of so-called ‘defective T’ (a postulate originally discussed in Chomsky 2000, 2001) and seeks a label-based theoretical explanation of phenomena associated with the distribution of subjects in infinitival clauses.”

Demet Kayabaşı to Present at FEAST in June

A research paper by first-year graduate student Demet Kayabaşı has been accepted for "on stage" presentation at the ninth meeting of Formal and Experimental Advances in Sign Language Theory (FEAST), to be hosted remotely by The Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in early June. FEAST is the pre-eminent academic conference for formal/theoretical research on sign languages. The title of Demet’s talk is “On The Syntactic Category of the Reflexive KENDİ in Turkish Sign Language,” coauthored with Natasha Abner.

LSA article features Q&A with Kelly Wright

Kelly Wright is featured in a Q&A article titled “It’s Good to Hear Your Voice” by writer Susan Hutton for the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The article explores what our language really says about us and why we should love to hear the sound of our own voice.

Tamarae Hildebrandt Gives Plenary Talk 

Tamarae Hildebrandt gave a plenary talk at the Minnesota Undergraduate Linguistics Symposium, which was held virtually Saturday, April 17, hosted by Carleton College. The title of Tamarae’s talk was “Understanding the Implicit and Explicit Measures of Sentence Acceptability.”
