Our New Class: Good Manners Level 1

Ongoing training for good manners that every dog needs to learn!

In the past we offered the Good Manners Beginners Class for adult dogs and puppies who had graduated from our puppy class, Training Foundation Class for Puppies (formerly Pre Beginners Class for Puppies). In the class dogs learned exercises included in the CGC Foundation assessment (See “Great News! Mint has earned Canine Good Citizen Gold!“ below for more details about CGC). However, I felt that we would need to work on each exercise more instead of reviewing the exercises for CGC assessments. So, I decided to break down the content of the class into two levels.

To start with, we are offering the Good Manners Level 1 Class in May! In this class we will focus on things such as:

  • Socialisation

  • Walk on Loose Lead

  • Basic Cues, such as Sit and Down

  • Recall (Come)

  • Stay and Wait

  • Leave It

  • Cooperative Care

These have been covered in our puppy class but we will improve those skills further in this manners class.

Great News! Mint has earned Canine Good Citizen Gold!

First, let me explain what “Canine Good Citizen” is.

The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is a certification program that identifies and rewards dogs that have the training and demeanour to be reliable family members as well as good-standing community members. There are four levels, Foundation, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Here is a list of exercises for each level. In order to pass a test, the dog needs to demonstrate all the exercises in the level successfully.

My eleven-year-old Beagle, Mint, earned his CGC Foundation and Bronze when he was two years old. However, he failed in a test for Silver two years ago, because he was unable to complete the four-minute stay untied with the handler out of sight. At around three minutes, he came to find me…

Out-of-sight stays have been very tough for Mint, especially because he has anxiety issues due to his epilepsy. Although I wanted to pass the CGC Silver test with him, I tried not to push him too much because I didn’t want to give him unnecessary stress just for a title. So, I tried to practise stays with him only when he looked less anxious and also constantly looked for ways to give him the motivation to stay without me in sight.

Although he had been doing the stays reliably recently, we hadn’t practised them with other dogs around. So, I felt ecstatic when I saw him still staying in the down position with other dogs at the end of the out-of-sight stay during the assessment! After that, he passed all the exercises not only for Silver but also for Gold and as a result he earned his CGC Gold title!

Up and Down Game

“Up and Down Game” is one of pattern games invented by Leslie McDevitt to help reactive or nervous dogs.

If you have attended Training Foundation Class or Good Manners Beginners Class last year or this year, you may have learned another very helpful pattern game by Leslie McDevitt, “1, 2, 3 Game”. In fact many students from the classes have reported that they find the game very helpful!

While “1, 2, 3 Game” helps you and your dog keep moving with your dog focused on you, “Up and Down Game” helps your dog stay connected with you in one place. It may be helpful during a vet visit or other situations where your dog needs to stay in a location that makes him feel very nervous.

The rule of this game is simple!! When your dog looks at you, place or toss a treat on the ground in front of you. The repetition of this simple pattern helps your dog stay connected with you. In order to use this game in actual situations, you need to practise it at home. It is simple but fun! So, play the game using part of your dog’s meals!
