3 things to know

🚒 Fire season is just around the corner — again. And Oregonians are paying attention, especially after several destructive wildfires burned parts of the state last summer. Both Clackamas and Multnomah County issued temporary burn bans over the weekend as temperatures rose in the city. Want to know some ways to prepare yourself and your home for wildfire season? You can find a great list from Portland Fire & Rescue here.

💉 All Oregon adults 16-and-older are now vaccine-eligible as of yesterday. You can sign up atGetVaccinatedOregon.org to schedule an appointment and find pharmacies near you carrying the COVID-19 vaccine. Right now the state is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases, but as of Monday, well over a million Oregonians have been fully vaccinated. NPR estimated that more than half of U.S. adults had gotten at least one vaccine shot. If you’re one of those folks and find yourself with questions, Oregon Public Broadcasting has a great article to help

➡️ A man was fatally shot in Lents Park by Portland police over the weekend, sparking protests. The man was identified as Robert Douglas Delgado, who was 46-years-old. Police officials said they were responding to a call about a white man pointing a gun. According to a report from KOIN, “It is unclear if Delgado was pointing a gun when he was shot.” Protests followed in the wake of the shooting, joining current protests against police brutality against people of color across the nation. Delgado’s family said he was a kind and generous man, adding “Our family has a hole in our hearts that will never be filled.” A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for funeral expenses.

3 things to make you smile / feel big feelings

🐶 You could wander Middle Earth if you look into adopting Gimili the Australian Cattle Dog. Gimili is white and black, about five years old, and experiences deafness and may need extra care. He would do great in a very calm low-traffic home without children or other pets. (And extra time to have an extended cut watch-through of all of the Lord of the Rings movies). You can learn more about Gimili here

🍅 The Portland Saturday Market is open for the season.  The first market of 2021 was held over the weekend, and you can find it on Saturdays at 2 SW Naito Parkway. The Portland Saturday Market also needs your help. Like many businesses and organizations, they were hit hard financially by the pandemic and are trying to fundraise to save the market. Support and donate to the market here

🤔 Wanna learn how to cook like a Top Chef contestant? Well, now’s your moment. Portland Top Chef contestant Sara Hauman of Soter Vineyards is hosting a Zoom cooking class on Earth Day, this Thursday, to show you how to cook sustainably at home using natural ingredients. All proceeds raised go to the Wave Foundation, which is focused on environmental justice including for Native and BIPOC communities in Oregon. You can register for the class here

💗 A guide to give back with Equitable Giving Circle

Did you know that Equitable Giving Circle has a great directory to support Black Indigenous and People of Color businesses here in Portland?

EGC is devoted to helping BIPOC Portlanders and farmers on every level, which is why it’s so important to help them keep doing what they’re doing.

You can help them help more people by directly supporting them, donating resources, volunteering your time and platforms, attending one of their events, and getting the word out about the great work they do. You can also help EGC support local Black businesses by purchasing one of their curated gift boxes, which are chock full of wonderfulness. You can learn more about what goes into a curated gift box here

This organization is amazing and devoted to helping BIPOC Portlanders directly — let’s keep the good work going.
