April news from MDEM

MDEM Update
Welcome to this edition of the MDEM newsletter.  I’m sure it’s been busy for all of you recently whether reopening in April where you have an outside offer, or preparing for reopening indoor venues from 17 May.  We wish you well and hope the MDEM team can get out and about this year to see some of you where possible. I’m sure there will be some reticence from the public to visiting indoor attractions for some time yet and social distancing/ hand sanitising, etc. (and all the challenges that brings) will continue as in daily life but, throughout all of this, we appear to be an ever-adaptable sector, adept at finding creative solutions. ALVA (Association of Leading Visitor Attractions) report that visitor figures were down by 66% in 2020 with secondary spend, e.g. in shops and cafes, obviously taking a huge hit.  Some sites in our region never opened in 2020 and this year must surely bring an improvement, but it is worth looking out for grant-aid that may help your site if you’re struggling - whether that’s the next round of Culture Recovery Funding from Arts Council England/ National Lottery Heritage Fund (we’ll let you know when we hear a date), Art Fund grants programme which launches around end of May, or MDEM’s grants that are now open for applications.

Family Friendly Museum Reopening

MDEM are thrilled to be launching our partnership programme of support for East Midlands museums with Kids in Museums, to ensure a family friendly museum environment after reopening in 2021.

This partnership will deliver two main strands of support, a reopening training event (see details below) and an intensive support programme for up to 6 museums to engage.

This programme will provide consultancy support, peer networking and targeted training and will be aimed at museums without dedicated learning teams, to help them to revisit their offer through a family friendly lens.

We will release further information about the programme at the reopening event and this will be published on our website and in our newsletter.
