GiveBig Washington is on May 4th and 5th and early giving starts this week! There are so many great stories of our Vashon community giving big year round. Over the next few weeks until GiveBig, we will be highlighting a few of these stories, and share how you can GiveBig too!
Community Giving Story #1 - The Food Bank Garden
The Vashon Food Bank Garden is a great example of our Vashon giving community. The Food Bank grows fresh produce in a garden on-site at Sunrise Ridge, in partnership with the Vashon Master Gardeners. In 2020, over 1200 pounds of vegetables were harvested and delivered directly to customers.
The Vashon Master Gardeners have helped fund this project, and have also provided garden expertise and volunteer time for the past 4 years. In addition to the Master Gardners, there are many other community volunteers contributing to the garden. In just this one garden bed alone, there are so many people that have volunteered their time and resources. The seeds were donated by Wild Dreams Farm, then grown as starts in the greenhouse at Pacific Crest Farm, and then planted by our volunteer garden crew. The compost was donated by Schafer Specialty Landscaping & Design, the grass next to the bed was mowed by John L Scott staff volunteers, the broadfork used for working the soil was donated by Meadow Creature, and the fence around the garden that keeps the deer from eating all these vegetables was built by Vashon Rotary Club volunteers. So many helpers in one little garden bed! Thank you all for giving big year round!
