EMILY KULESA'S INAUGURAL CHAIR'S CORNER

Hello Everyone!

I am thrilled to be writing my first Chair’s Corner for you all. I am really excited to be taking on the mantle of co-chair with Katherine and am excited about the future of the Women’s Caucus!

A little bit about me for those who do not know me yet. Originally from Long Island, New York, I moved to the UK at 17 to study Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews. After my course I moved down to London for my masters and to work at a national environmental charity. I am now a software engineer who is passionate about how technology can be a force for good.

Having been co-chair for a few months now, I have been able to run a few wonderful events, including the first two meetings of our new Podcast Club! I have lots of plans for the caucus and am looking forward to seeing what we can do in 2021!

I have a few main goals that I would like to achieve as co-chair. Firstly, I am so proud of all the hard work our members put in to help Democrats take back the White House in 2020. We used our activism skills to make a real difference back home. For 2021, I want to highlight how the Women’s Caucus and Democrats Abroad can take action and bring expats together in between election years. We are currently working on slates of events that focus on current events, activism, and skill building. By having a diverse slate of events, we can ensure there is truly an event for anyone looking to get involved with the Women’s Caucus.

I am also thrilled to see so many new regional groups being founded across the UK. While many of our events have been focused on London, the virtual formats we have used over the past year have allowed us to connect with American women living across the UK. For this year, we really want to focus on connecting with these women and expanding our reach.

Of course, the 2022 midterms are around the corner. I am looking forward to connecting with our members to strengthen our knowledge and craft new and innovative ways to participate in activism to make sure our voices are heard!

I welcome any member who has ideas for events, content, or simply wants to get involved. Email me at womenscaucus@democratsabroad.org.uk with all your amazing ideas!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the next Women’s Caucus meeting!

- Emily

UPCOMING EVENTS
Film Night: Pro-Choice: Rights and Access on Friday, May 7th at 7pm BST
A collaboration of the DAUK Film Committee, DAUK Women's Caucus, Speakeasy and the DA Global Women's Caucus

Join the Film Committee for an exclusive screening and conversation with Barbara Attie, the award-winning director of the short documentary Abortion Helpline: This is Lisa.  Take this opportunity to engage in an important and timely discussion of key and pressing  issues facing American women: the unrelenting struggle to secure the basic right to exercise control over their own bodies, health and the choice whether to have children. This film takes us into the room where counsellors staffing an under-funded abortion helpline listen to women’s urgent appeals for financial help.

DA and DAUK members who have played leading roles advocating and working on these issues will lead the after-screening discussion. With Democrats in power, we can and will advance women’s healthcare rights.

Asian-American Pacific Islander Intersectionality Event on Wednesday, May 19th at 7pm BST

Over the past year, 3,800 incidents of discrimination and hate crimes against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community have been reported - two out of three by women - everything from physical assaults to verbal accusations. In commemoration of Asian History Month, join the Women's Caucus for an open discussion to learn more about the lived experience of the AAPI community within Democrats Abroad, the history of anti-Asian racism in the United States, and to learn what you can do as an ally or member of the community if you experience or witness xenophobia.

RSVP at: womenscaucus@democratsabroad.org.uk

From the Global Asian-American Pacific Islander Caucus:
A Conversation with Asian-American Leaders on Friday, May 7th at 7pm CEDT/6pm BST

The DA Global AAPI caucus and the North and Central Bavaria Chapter will celebrate AAPI month with a conversation with:

Andy Kang,
Executive Director, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Chicago

Emily Lines,
Global AAPI Caucus Co-Chair, DA Germany Vice-Chair.

Join them for an educational discussion on AAPI issues and learn about the work we all need to do to support the AAPI community.

From the Global Women's Caucus:
Books Abroad: The House of Mirth on Sunday, May 23 at 2pm CEDT/1pm BST

Join the Books Abroad, Feminist Reading Group for a discussion of "The House of Mirth" by Edith Wharton.

Written in 1905, the novel tells the story of a young woman reaching her 29th year, an age when her youth is coming to an end and her marital prospects are becoming slim. "The House of Mirth" traces her descent from privilege to a lonely life on the margins of society. Wharton in The House of Mirth probes her situation like an entomologist. A classic novel by a writer who was controversial in her own rite, it deftly portrays the moral, social and economic restraints on a woman who dared to claim the privileges of marriage without assuming the responsibilities.

“The story carries you along even though it takes place in the early 20th century in a world and milieu that are far from us today. It shows us the progress we’ve made, even though we have a long way to go! What’s instructive and worthy of discussion is the question of what makes a feminist,” says Sheila Malovany-Chevallier, the Books Abroad planning team member who nominated the book.
