The Cobnut

EO's round up

Yes, the Tri-Nut Conference will be held in 2021

After much deliberation we have decided to go ahead with planning the 2021 Tri-Nut Conference. The conference was due to be held in September 2020 but COVID put a stop to that.

Originally it was planned to go to Batlow/Tumbarumba but unfortunately, we do not feel we can find the relevant facilities to satisfy COVID restrictions. We have decided instead to go to Moama in NSW, over the river from Echuca.

Dates:  Friday 10 to Sunday 12 September 2021.
Venue: Moama Bowling Club, Shaw Street, MOAMA.
Conference: From 12:00 noon (registration) on Friday to 5:30pm Saturday.

Some of the highlights planned:
  • Friday night BBQ and ‘barefoot lawn bowls’ under the awning.
  • Full day Conference on Saturday
  • Formal Conference Dinner on Saturday night.
  • Farm Walks and visits on Sunday.
  • Keynote speaker already booked – John Stanley
John is a Nuffield Scholar and has been a consultant to the farming and gardening industries for over forty years.  His clients are in over 35 countries around the globe.

John is recognised by the Professional Speakers Association as one of the top 10% of speakers in the world. He is a regular speaker at farm conferences in the USA, Canada and Europe. He and his wife have spoken at chestnut growers conferences in Italy and the USA. John and Linda own Chestnut Brae orchard in WA.

Delegates are encouraged to come a day early and explore the region or come up early On Friday to spend the morning exploring.

There is a wide range of accommodation in both Moama and Echuca, so you are encouraged to look at what is available and book early.
A package of accommodation available will be forwarded over the coming week.

New platform to connect the world to agricultural innovation opportunities within Australia

Introducing growAG., a centralised online platform that showcases Australia’s agrifood innovation opportunities, success stories, and a comprehensive database of Australia’s current agrifood research projects.

growAG. has been launched in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) and all of Australia’s 15 Research and Development Corporations (RDCs).  AgriFutures Australia will manage growAG. on their behalf.

growAG. will act as a gateway for Australian’s agrifood innovation system, with all information on the platform being free to access and allowing investors, corporates, startups, researchers, industry, government and universities from Australia and around the world to locate information and opportunities to deliver innovation back to the farm and the food supply-chain.

Farmers can now see their levy funded research projects from across the RDC network in one location using filters to search across the different commodities. growAG. creates transparency across the agricultural sector whilst showcasing our important information to the world.

You can use growAG. to find Australia’s world leading agricultural research, unique technologies, success stories and commercialisation opportunities.

Farmers fight on to contain feral animals

ABARES’ latest report confirms that Australia’s farmers are spending significant amounts of time and money on battling pests and weeds.

ABARES acting Executive Director, Dr Jared Greenville, said the Pest Animal and Weed Management Survey 2016-2019: Land manager survey results demonstrated that land management in Australia was an ongoing job.

“We surveyed 6,470 farmers in 2016, and 8,059 in 2019 and they responded from across Australia. The biggest change we saw was a 41 per cent increase between 2016 and 2019 in farmers reporting crop loss, degradation or loss of value from pests, particularly insects,” Dr Greenville said.
