According to the Hong Kong Cancer Registry (2018), breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Hong Kong, ranking at number one, with cervical cancer ranking at number seven. On average, about 12 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, and one in every 14 women have a risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.

Why do a check-up at all?

It is worth taking care of yourself with pre-emptive screenings, and a regular check-up is crucial for preventative measures. Mammograms help detect early, non-palpable tumours, and it is recommended that women aged 40 and over should have a professional examination and a mammogram every two years. Those with a family history of breast cancer should stay vigilant with a rigorous, annual screening schedule.
 
Regular cervical screenings are also an effective way to prevent cervical cancer. A liquid-based pap test is a simple and quick screening test that only takes a few minutes, which can detect early abnormal changes in the cervix. When such changes are found, they can be treated before cancer develops.
