Money isn't everything, but it's a long way ahead of what comes next.

Do you often lie awake at night wondering how you are going to finance your next project? How you are going to pay for all your staff? Where you are going to find funding to do what you know is needed in your sector? How you are going to live up to all the promises you’ve made to your latest donor?

Well, you’re not alone. We do too. And so do your colleagues in other media development organisations. We know this because that’s what you’ve told us. Time and time again.

So we are proud to present the GFMD Fundraising Resource Centre for Media Development. This first edition of our monthly fundraising newsletter will be introducing the guide to you alongside some of the latest funding opportunities and an introduction to our Fundraising Resource Centre's donor profiles for the Media Development Investment Fund and USAID.

Our team, led by Anne Marie Hammer, would like to ask you to subscribe to this newsletter and send us suggestions and ideas on how to improve our content.

Too many organisations chase money but then they don't have the skills, foresight and passion to do what they've taken money to do.

A webinar for interested applicants is planned on Monday 5 July 2021, between 15h and 17h (Brussels time) to explain this call, as well as other relevant calls for news media. The EU has yet to announce the link to the Webex meeting but we will of course provide this for you as soon as we have it. There is no need to register.

The Media Development Investment Fund

We are looking for the next generation of media entrepreneurs.
Mohamed Nanabhay, Deputy CEO of MDIF

The Media Development Investment Fund recently launched the $1 million Media Ventures fund, focusing on young and growing media companies with a positive social impact and the potential to scale. The investments are taking place in countries where media freedom and access to independent media are under threat.

MDIF prioritises projects aimed at addressing accountability, strengthening debate, or reducing information poverty.  MDIF Ventures does not provide grants or loans. It will provide equity investments in selected media companies, taking an ownership stake.

MDIF Ventures plans to deploy $1 million across approximately 12 companies in 2021. The deadline for the first round of applications has already passed but watch this space for information about the second round of applications.

Read more about MDIF Ventures here.

You can find MDIF's profile on our MediaDev Fundraising guide.
US Department of State
The U.S. Embassy in Nepal has announced an open competition for not-for-profit organizations to submit proposals on curbing elections misinformation through information literacy. This funding opportunity seeks to train tech-savvy youth between the ages of 16 and 30 from all seven provinces of Nepal.

See details on the call for proposals here.

The U.S. Department of State leads America’s foreign policy through diplomacy, advocacy, and foreign assistance. For media development agencies, the most relevant State Department programmes are those channelled through the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Affairs (DRL) and the Global Engagement Center (GEC).

You can find the US Department of State's profile on our MediaDev Fundraising guide. And check out the GFMD Fundraising Guide's module on Common Templates for information on how to use the US Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) most common template for media development funding applications.
