Welcome to the Spring/Summer edition of The BOG Standard, continuing to bring you the latest from the world of Moors for the Future Partnership. With the bulk of our conservation work paused to allow room for the breeding bird season to take place, we're looking back on what we've achieved as well as looking forward to the easing of lockdown and the possibilities that brings.

A record-breaking works season against all odds

Against a backdrop of ever-changing circumstances and a challenging year for nature, we’re pleased to say that the conservation work this year has not only been completed successfully, but has been the largest conservation season to date for Moors for the Future Partnership.

Partnership recognised by national award

The feat of innovation demonstrated by Moors for the Future Partnership to keep our restoration works on schedule has been recognised in the Park Protector Awards 2021 (held by the Campaign for National Parks), with the Partnership being awarded one of the two runner-up positions.

Work to restore iconic pathway completed

This spring we conducted work to restore the heavily worn and eroded path along the Great Ridge. This work will protect the habitat surrounding the route by helping walkers to keep to the path. It will also improve conditions underfoot, making the route safer, more accessible and visually in keeping with the landscape.

Peat restoration on a wind farm

For our conservation and land management team there is no such thing as a 'one size fits all' approach to peatland restoration, as we found when we were called upon to restore moorland in the shadow of a wind farm.

Happy 70th Birthday

This April we celebrated the 70th Birthday of the Peak District National Park. As part of this, the work of Moors for the Future Partnership and the importance of peatland was captured in the third part of Mark Gwynne Jones' evocative soundscape Voices of the Peak, where Chris Dean talked about the challenges facing the area.

Back on the road again

Following over a year of enforced absence from our face-to-face engagement, our Bogtastic van is preparing to go back on the road again, taking the Bogtastic message to communities around the Peak District and South Pennines. Keep an eye on our website and social media for where we'll be in the coming months, and come and say hello.
