Spring 2021 Newsletter

Creating spaces and places to make life better.

Spring is a time of change, where nature says it’s time to party! There is light at the end of the tunnel, and we’re excited to see a glimpse of it and of people embracing the opportunities.

At Barr Gazetas, change is afoot. We have had a chance to look at ourselves, our values, our people, our projects, and our vision. We have a renewed energy and have enjoyed restructuring the studio to provide a sustainable future for all.

Our renewed vision

In 2021 we renewed our company values and in each newsletter we'd like to share one of these with you; this month is our culture:

"A close-knit team of architects who are excited by the world around us. We take nothing as given. We challenge and question to ensure we always deliver better outcomes, and we are responsible to each other. Our culture is one of vibrancy, fun, openness and trust. Where people are united in their common passion for exceptional design and a commitment to bring joy to our work every day."

Having officially been in lockdown for a full year, we wanted to reflect on the positives. Many of us had time for our hobbies and even tried some new skills - whether it was spending time in nature, growing some plants, getting stuck into some home DIY or an art project, or spending more quality time with the kids.

High quality facilities at Mid City Place

We have designed and implemented bold and modern commuter facilities to complement the stylish and contemporary workspace at Mid City Place.

Through rich colours and striking graphics, wayfinding and navigation has been improved as well as a sense of identity.

Grade A refurbishment in the West End

We kicked off 2021 with planning consent for a new office refurbishment at 20-22 Berkeley Square for Astrea.

The scheme includes the retrofit of 22,000sqft of workspace, an art-deco reception, and a new restaurant and roof terraces.

The Department of Health

After a year in which the retail sector has suffered, Property Week asked us to to envisage a solution to revive the UK’s struggling high streets.

In our proposal, envisioning a post-COVID world, the department store becomes The Department of Health: a central hub for community, fun, learning, hospitality, and living, as well as retail, all geared at nurturing our physical and mental wellbeing.

Retrofit of 6 Langley Street completed

Our refurbishment of heritage-led 6 Langley Street celebrates its character and prominence.

We are delighted with this great example of retrofit, which has modernised the site without compromising its historic character.

Innovative modular housing in Watford

We have kicked off an exciting residential project in Watford for Fruition Properties

The new build development utilises innovative modular construction techniques, creating c.40 units of high-quality homes, with associated private and communal amenity space.

2 More London is transformed

We have completed our comprehensive refurbishment at 2 More London on the South Bank.

Light and contemporary materials create a welcoming feel, alongside external works delivering a strengthened identity from the street.

Director promotions & new starters

We are delighted to announce two important promotions. We have been busy growing our company leadership and are excited to welcome Tom Jordan, now Technical Director, and Renata Bruni, Finance Director, to the Board.

Welcome to...

University teaching across the country

Jonathan Allwood and Tom Jordan have been working at the University of Greenwich with MArch students in technical tutorials; Tom also covered construction detailing with BA students.

Alistair Barr has spoken at Anglia Ruskin University and at the University of Bedfordshire about interior architecture.

Urban resilience in the face of COVID

Alistair hosted the Academy of Urbanism Hour about rapid urban changes in London.

Scott Marshall from The Crown Estate discussed increased pedestrian access at Regent Street, while Esther Kurland from Urban Design London explained how lockdown 'turbo-charged' their ideas.
