Friends of MICD,

We're delighted to share the recording of the 2021 LAF Medal & Founders' Award ceremony, where I accepted the Founders' Award on behalf of MICD. I shared a bit about how the Institute has pivoted over the past year, and we were surprised by a humbling tribute from some of the best landscape architects out there. But I really encourage you to hear from Karen Phillips, FASLA, a passionate public servant and a leading figure of the second Harlem Renaissance, about her journey in the field of landscape architecture. View the recording below.

In addition, we are excited to share a recent U.S. Conference of Mayors discussion on the post-pandemic future of cities, featuring architect and MICD alum Vishaan Chakrabarti. Vishaan lead mayors through a fast-paced, forward-thinking presentation that covered everything from sustainability to gentrification to the fact that we aren’t going to build cities we love by “bootstrapping technology onto old land use patterns.” We think mayors and design professionals alike will benefit from this snappy presentation.

Lastly, we're sharing the most recent installment of Next City's Design Leaders series, highlighting another of our Just City Mayoral Fellows, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard of Mount Vernon, NY. It's exciting to share what we've seen up close over the last six months: as she enters her second year in office, she and her team are "totally rethinking the process" of getting a transformational development project off the ground after decades of stops and starts. Watch: MICD Receives LAF Founders' Award
Landscape Architecture Foundation

MICD is honored and humbled to have received the 2021 Founders' Award from the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF), its highest honor for organizations. The award recognizes MICD's "longstanding and consistent impact through the tangible improvements that have materialized through its workshops. The initiative reveals overlooked possibilities of public space to city officials while demonstrating the value of landscape architecture."

In a virtual ceremony on April 8, Executive Director Trinity Simons accepted the award on behalf of MICD, while Karen Phillips, FASLA, accepted the LAF Medal. We invite you to watch the ceremony — including a special tribute video from distinguished landscape architects and MICD Resource Team alumni Mary Margaret Jones, Mia Lehrer, and Laurie Olin — at the link below.

Watch: What Will Your City Look Like Post-Pandemic?

U.S. Conference of Mayors

What will the future of downtowns, businesses, and retail look like after the pandemic? As mayors navigate the uncertainty ahead and work to shape the future of their communities, what can be done to help ensure a low-carbon and equitable path forward? The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) recently hosted a discussion on the post-COVID future of cities, available as a recording here

This discussion was led by Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, chair of the Alliance for a Sustainable Future, and featured a fascinating presentation from MICD Resource Team alumnus Vishaan Chakrabarti. An architect, educator, and author, Chakrabarti designs and advocates for an ecological and equitable urban future centered on human connectedness. He advances these goals as the founder of his New York architecture studio, PAU, where he leads projects such as Brooklyn’s Domino Sugar Refinery, Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Yards, Detroit’s Michigan Central Station, Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame expansion, Princeton’s Hobson College, an urban village in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. His presentation took us through emerging demographic patterns and introduced a new framework of "jobs, justice, and joy" for future decision-making.

"This NYC Suburb Is Ready to Bring Community Into the Affordable Housing Conversation"

Next City

In the most recent installment of “Design Leaders,” a new series from Next City highlighting mayors’ roles in design and the built environment, Mount Vernon, NY Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard discusses her evolving vision for affordable housing in her city. Mayor Patterson-Howard participated in the inaugural MICD Just City Mayoral Fellowship last fall and is a current recipient of MICD Alumni Technical Assistance.

“Where you invest your time and energy and resources speaks to your priorities and where you fail to invest your time also speaks to your lack of interest and this is a neighborhood that has truly been forgotten about,” Patterson-Howard says.

The method for investing in The Hilltop has been largely influenced by Patterson-Howard’s involvement in the inaugural Just City Mayoral Fellowship, a collaboration between the Mayors’ Institute on City Design and the Just City Lab at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design...

Prior to her participation in the fellowship, Patterson-Howard was thinking of selling the city-owned land to developers — something that the Just City Lab cautioned against. “Really, our participation allowed us to pull back and totally rethink the process and how, as a community, we can take more leadership in the development of this project as opposed to just selling the land… and ensure that the community is involved in this conversation,” she says. Now, the city is considering long-term leases and land trusts, so that the city retains ownership and has more of a say in what the hilltop’s transformation will look like. Moving forward, Patterson-Howard will receive two consultants to help the city move through the process.
