WHAT WOMEN CREATE

I'M A COVER GIRL! I'm so excited to share that 'The Grandmothers' project is featured in the latest issue of WHAT WOMEN CREATE magazine. In the article I discuss how I find inspiration for these large projects and a bit about my process. Initially the article was to be published in the Winter issue but I was so happy to learn that it was bumped up to the Summer edition. And I was thrilled to find out this recent photograph in front of the 'Extraordinary Women' project was selected for the cover of the current issue.

This is such a beautiful publication, as are all of the magazines created by this publisher. I always feel privileged to have my work included. Issues are available through Chapters/Indigo and Michaels across North America along with many other locations.

Tiny Houses

In 2012, I wrote an article for a magazine titled 'City of Refuge' based on a series of little 'houses' that I had cut out of reclaimed wood and painted. Since I prefer to work on stretched canvas, I have always wanted to replicate that idea in a different way. When I began painting little cottages in my sketchbook, the intent was to expand onto 6x6 gallery depth canvases and I'm really happy with the results. I wanted to incorporate my airbrushed backgrounds while keeping the colours light, bright and spring-like. I think it worked beautifully. Such a fun way to create a 'little village'.

More Extraordinary Women
It seems as though there are a lot of creative Canadian women on my list of 'Extraordinary Women'. I seem to lean heavily towards musicians, actors and authors, though there are also many more athletes, politicians and activists still to visit. What I find especially interesting is the fact that many of these women are also activists. They use their platform to educate and uplift. I love that. Pochade
I am often asked about my pochade. I've had it for many, many years and I think it's my absolute favourite art tool.  This one was created by Judson's Art Outfitters and is also know as the 6x8 ThumBox Guerilla Painter. They are built a little differently than they were back then, as now the box is a little smaller, but since I work in acrylics I tend to need a little more storage space for my tubes of paint. When I ordered mine, I added the flip out palette extension on the right and it came with a tripod mount, leather handle and rubber feet to place on a tabletop. I also added a leather shoulder strap (which clips into the D-rings at the front of the box though I don't use it too often), a stay wet palette, a small covered water dish and also removed the panel holders in the 180 degree lid as I prefer to work with stretched canvas and, because it accomodates an 8 inch wide canvas, it is perfect for me since I tend to work on 4x4 to 8x10 inch gallery depth or 7x14 or 8x10 inch standard depth canvases. Mine also includes a flip panel inside to cover the thumb hole, which it no longer includes - that is so helpful to keep my brushes, rags, pens, paint and water dish from falling out.  I also love to work with short handled brushes, so this works especially well for me. It no longer looks this nice, but still works like a charm. Mine measures 9x7x5 inches though now they are only 3 inches high instead of 5, which would also make them lighter and easier to carry or pack. I love the fact that it's easy to set up a little 'studio' anywhere I go. It's cute and functional.

LevellingUp!

I'm beginning to look forward to working with two monthly group meetings...there is something so special about collaborating with a group of talented, friendly women that is so inspiring. I'm so happy to share what I've learned and to hear how each woman in the group supports and encourages the others. There are also fantastic panels taking place for members to take part in...I was part of a panel discussing the challenge of pricing artwork and there was another on branding and social media.
