Keep The Pack On Track
screen capture of Chancellor Randy Woodson

Take a moment to watch a video message from Chancellor Randy Woodson. As we near the end of the semester, it’s important that we continue doing all we can to keep the Pack on track for a return to a more normal campus environment in the months ahead. Read more about our campus response to COVID-19 and vaccine availability.

Coin For Exceptional Service
Rick Hilburn and David Sanderson of Landscape Construction Services and Courtney Eads of Grounds and Building Services were recognized for their collaborative work and involvement in the Henry Square project. Each person took on a significant role from managing crews and installation process to the detail of every plants and trees being properly planted. Rick sought out ways to improve the landscape beyond the plan. David paid attention to detail to ensure clean and precise brick paver work performed. Courtney designed the annual and perennial beds while she sourced and managed the order of plants from nurseries. The hardscape near Holladay Hall and the landscape around the Memorial Belltower are looking better than ever thanks to Facilities Divisions' superb team!
Belltower: Henry Square Landscape
The original landscape around the Belltower was deigned by Joshua Plummer Pillsbury, a professor of horticulture (1911 - 1940), professor of landscape architecture (1940 - 1946), and the landscape architect (1925 - 1946) at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University). Eighty years later, University Landscape Architect Tom Skolnicki created another comprehensive planting plan to renovate the site. There were two primary goals to the project: create a holistic landscape for all of Henry Square and make the site safer for personnel to maintain. The area had plants added to it over time, and the site had become quite shady and a bit overgrown. In order to restore it to the spirit of the original plan, several trees and bushes were removed, and common shrubs and groundcovers were added throughout. A big challenge of the plan was to make the slope facing Hillsborough Street less steep so that it is safer for staff to maintain while still preserving the original design intent. The project also addressed some stormwater issues by regrading the lawns and adding new yard inlets. Many internal and external partners including Landscape Construction Services, Grounds Services, Capital Project Management, Transportation, and Urban Forest Committee were involved in this successful project.
Paperless In The Utility Plants
The Central Utility Plants have been collecting daily operator rounds on paper for years, using 32 pieces of paper for each day's rounds. We began a project last year to both eliminate paper use while also providing more immediate feedback and a data archive for the information. The paper process required the daily reports to be scanned as a pdf and it was virtually impossible to review historical information for trends. Steve Lysenko (Assistant Plant Engineer) began working with Mike Lytle of the Facilities Division's AiM Team to determine how to utilize our existing platform, AiM. They were able to utilize a feature of AiM, called PM Meter Routes, to collect all required data from the rounds using the iPads in each plant. This allows for immediate feedback and tracking of results, as well as a historical trend of each reading. The project has been so successful that Mike and Steve were asked to present their design intent, process and product to other university AiM users during the Assetworks Virtual Conference. Many thanks to Mike and Steve for making this possible.
