Earth Month 2021
Find all of the fantastic events we have planned for UC Davis during Earth Month at earthday.ucdavis.edu.
Climate Justice Symposium for Transforming Education - Apr 28 - May 1
This symposium will explore:
  • How to integrate climate justice into higher education curriculum (including into medical school curriculum) and how to scale up these efforts;
  • Community engagement through climate justice curricula;
  • Just and transformative pedagogies; and
  • The role of health in the climate crisis dialogue.
This event is free and open to anyone interested in attending. Live sessions will occur between 10am-12pm and 2-4pm each day in addition to pre-recorded sessions available at your convenience. All live components of the conference will also be recorded and available after the event. Registration link for attendance.

Sacramento City Nature Challenge - Apr 30 - May 3
The Sacramento City Nature Challenge is coming up very soon -- observations will happen April 30 through May 3! We encourage you to download iNaturalist, and submit observations as part of a global effort that will include thousands of people in more than 300 cities across the world. You can do this right in your own home, or use it as an excuse to go explore beautiful places throughout the Sacramento region (just remember to keep #covidsafe). Nature Rx and Equity in Green Spaces - May 7, 5:30-6:30 pm
Join us to learn more about Nature Rx, an area of research and programming highlighting the benefits of nature on our physical and mental health. This UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden workshop explores the need for equitable and inclusive green spaces particularly with regard to supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)
communities. We will provide resources and suggested activities for bridging the Nature Gap and increasing access to green spaces for all. REGISTER NOW here.
UC Davis Sustainability Champion Awards - Nominations now extended to May 9 at midnight
If you know an outstanding student, staff, or faculty member who is going above and beyond their work responsibilities to make UC Davis more sustainable, nominate them for a Sustainability Champion award here. Winners will be announced by Chancellor Gary May at the annual Sustainability Summit on May 21. The deadline for the nominations closes Sunday, May 9 at midnight!

UC Davis Moves - May 9-15
Join us for a virtual week of UC Davis Moves (formerly UC Walks)! From Sunday, May 9, through Saturday, May 15, choose your favorite physical activity and strive to move for at least 30 minutes per day. Register for UC Davis Moves through this Qualtrics link. Once registered, you will receive an email each day from May 9 - 15 with ideas to get moving as well as a link to report your physical activity minutes for that day. Each day that you enter your minutes, you will receive an entry for one of our prize drawings.

New this year is a Buddies Program: An opportunity to meet 2 - 3 new colleagues at UC Davis and provide support to one another to get moving during this program and beyond. World Climate Simulation - May 14 and May 21, 4pm
UC Davis Sustainability and Global Affairs invite you to join a dynamic climate-focused World Climate Simulationrole-playing exercise based on UN climate change negotiations. The goal is to better understand the dynamics behind climate change and what governments need to do to address critical climate issues. An orientation will be held May 17 from 4-5:30pm, where participants will be given a country to represent and research, followed by the actual simulation on May 24 from 4-6:30pm. Participants will need to do some research outside of the event as well as represent a country in actual negotiations. Register for the event here.
UCSF Population Health and Health Equity Speaker Series - May 20
The Spring 2021 Climate Change and Health Speaker Series is hosted by the UCSF School of Medicine Office of Population Health and Health Equity and the UCSF Center for Climate, Health, and Equity. The series will feature sessions dedicated to some of the most pressing health and equity issues driven by the climate crisis, with a spotlight on California. The sessions will be held remotely via Zoom and recorded for those unable to join the live events.

Now, More Than Ever: Movement Building for Climate, Racial, and Health Justice - May 20 - 2:30pm-4pm | This session will focus on the synergies between climate and racial justice movements and their promise in improving health, and community-based advocacy and policy initiatives to promote climate and racial justice in California and beyond. Register here.
UC Davis Sustainability Summit - May 21, 10 am - 11:30 am - REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
Mark your calendars for the annual UC Davis Sustainability Summit! The Sustainability Summit will celebrate the campus' sustainability achievements this year, and Chancellor Gary May will be joining us to recognize and announce our campus sustainability champions at this annual event. Gratitude and Gardening - May 21, 5:30-6:30 pm
Come learn about the importance of connecting with nature for physical and mental well-being benefits (Nature Rx). This UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden workshop focuses on the health benefits of gardening and gratitude journaling. Gardening is one of the ways to receive the benefits of Nature Rx such as: relaxation, a sense of accomplishment, self-reliance, physical activity, connection to nature, and a sharper mind. We will also highlight the Good Life Garden and campus resources such as The Pantry which provides healthy, fresh food available to all UC Davis students. REGISTER NOW here.

UC Davis Voluntary University Review on the UN SDGs
UC Davis is pursuing a Voluntary University Review (VUR) to support our university’s role as a public land-grant institution in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This is a joint effort between Global AffairsSustainability, and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.  We invite all students, scholars, staff, researchers and faculty to share details about their SDG efforts through this online portal.  Share your story and inspire others!

Green Home Office/Study Space Certification - Now Available!
Ever wonder how "green" your home office or study space is, or how to improve it while sheltering in place? Take the Green Home Office/Study Space Certification--a program to help you make your home more environmentally friendly while we all are working and studying from home during the pandemic. There are four modules you can take online at your own pace, listed here. Email greenworkplace@ucdavis.edu with any questions.

Conference Grants for UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - now open
UC Davis Global Affairs, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and the Sustainability office are pleased to announce a call for virtual conference grants to support UC Davis faculty, staff and students in sharing UC Davis contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). TGIF Grant Application Cycle for Spring '21 Quarter - proposals accepted through May 31

Grant Cycle: March 29 – May 31, 2021
Eligibility: Students, Staff, Faculty
Award Amount: $200 - $20,000
The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF) is excited to announce that it will be transitioning to a rolling grant application period for Spring Quarter 2021! TGIF will be accepting grant proposals now through May 31, 2021. Proposal will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis. To learn more about the application process, please visit the TGIF Apply page or attend advising office hours. American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) Scholarships – closes June 14, 2021 11:59 pm (EDT)
In furthering a mission to increase and retaining the number of individuals choosing the transit field as a career, the APTF will award a minimum of thirty scholarships, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 to college students or transit professionals who are interested in pursuing or advancing in a career in the public transportation industry. Awards cover the academic year, beginning in the fall 2021 semester, and assist with tuition costs or other educational expenses. The call for applications opened in March 2021 with a mid-June deadline. Learn more about the requirements and apply here.
Work and Volunteer Opportunities
Gain more professional skills and work in the environmental field
Putah Creek Natural Reserve Technicians (2 student positions) - applications due May 2, 11:59pm
The technicians will work with Arboretum and Public Garden staff within the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve and the Campus Naturalized Lands to execute a wide variety of natural resource stewardship tasks associated with the ongoing management and maintenance of these diverse public spaces. Two student positions are available, and salary is $14,50/hour. For more information on job duties, qualifications, hours, start/end dates, and how to apply, click here.

TGIF strives to promote sustainable development by providing necessary funding to the UC Davis community. TGIF involves and educates students of all backgrounds by empowering them to develop, propose, and enact sustainable projects on campus.
