From the Rector
The Rev. Dr. Jared C. Cramer, SCP

Dear <<First Name>>

After a hiatus due to COVID, we are thrilled to be pulling together plans for our 2021 process for the Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows through Reception or Confirmation.

This year’s process will begin the week of July 11 (the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost, Proper 10). This process is also appropriate for adults who have not been baptized and would like to enter the Catechumenate for Baptism.

Sign-up online here to let us know you might be interested. Classes will likely meet on Zoom, at least at the beginning, unless all candidates are fully vaccinated and community infection rates are low enough. If we do meet in-person, a hybrid option will be allowed for people to participate electronically who may feel more comfortable with that approach.

When signing up, please indicate ALL the possible times you could meet for class. We’ll go with the time that will work best for the candidates. Classes will meet once a week for 90-minutes and will conclude with the Diocesan Confirmation Service likely on Saturday, October 30, in Lansing.

Adult candidates are most welcome, as are teenagers, but teenagers must be 16 by October 30, 2021, in order to be confirmed at the liturgy. The sign-up sheet will close on Sunday, June 13. On Monday, June 14, Father Cramer will email everyone with the day of the week we will gather.

I'm greatly looking forward to leading this year's process. We have people who have joined our church during COVID who have told me they are enthusiastic about participating, but no matter how short (or how long!) you've been at SJE, you are most welcome to join us!

Warmly,

NOTE: Our parish is continuing to track vaccination status for those who want to share that information and help us make decisions. If you haven’t already, and wouldn’t mind sharing, you can enter your vaccination status online here: www.tinyurl.com/vaccinatesje. When signing up for worship, if everyone in your pew has reached the fully effective point of our vaccination, and you would be open to sharing your pew with another fully vaccinated household, please put a “V” after your name. You can always view the current open sign-up sheets online at www.tinyurl.com/sjesignup and edit your information or email me and I'm happy to edit it for you. If a service you wish to attend is full, please add your name to the waiting list (or email me) and we'll let you know if a pew opens up.

March Vestry Minutes

The Minutes from the March Vestry Meeting have been approved and are available online here. Parishioners are always welcome to attend Vestry meetings (virtually, for now). The next meeting of the Vestry will be on the Zoom platform Monday, April 19, 6:15pm. If you would like to participate as a guest please contact Fr. Jared so he can send you the Zoom link. Archives of past meeting minutes are always available online here.

Subscribe to SJE Podcasts

Did you know there are not one, but TWO podcasts our parish runs, both of which are updated weekly?
The first one is the podcast feed for our sermons. You can subscribe to it on Apple Podcasts (or using whatever other podcast app you prefer) and you will always have access to the audio of the latest sermons from St. John's.
The second is Christian Mythbusters, a weekly 5-minute radio and podcast segment that Father Jared writes where he tries to unpack, debunk, and reconsider some of the ways we often think about Christianity and the church. You can also subscribe to that on Apple Podcasts, or your preferred podcast app.
Both are great ways to remain connected to SJE no matter where you are!

Do the "Murph" for Memorial Day with Father Jared!

St. John's is excited to be a Gold Sponsor of the "Murph" challenge in support of those who serve in the armed forces and in honor of those who gave their lives and who we recognize on Memorial Day. The event is on Memorial Day (Monday, May 31, 2021), hosted by 321 Wellness & Fitness Center, with times throughout the day to do the "Murph." A little more about that...
The “Murph” workout is in honor of Lt. Michael Murphy who passed away in 2008, during operation Red Wings. CrossFit gyms across the nation participate/workout in his honor. This particular workout was created from Lt. Michael Murphy’s favorite movements. After a month of training in May, everyone will get to see what time they can finish "The Murph" in!
During the month of May, if you are a veteran or active duty military you can register online for FREE to participate in one of the heats on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021 (use code "MurphVET"). Even more, you will be able to train FOR FREE the entire month of May at 321 Wellness in preparation! Just contact 321 Wellness and they'll be able to give you more information.
If you're not a veteran but want to train during May so that you can complete the "Murph" on Memorial Day in support of those who gave their lives and who we remember on Memorial Day, you can join too! Since we are a gold sponsor, the first two people who email Father Jared will get their event fee on Memorial Day waived! Everyone else can pay the registration fee when you register (there's even an early bird discount until May 7 if you use code "“EarlyMurph21”).  Then email 321 Wellness for pricing on one month of training at the gym. Father Jared will even be thrilled to meet you at your first workout to workout with you as an encouragement! All workouts at 321 Wellness have an outside and distanced option to fully comply with CDC guidelines.
All proceeds from this event will go directly to assist an Active Duty Military person participating in the event and what is left over will go to the Brain Treatment Foundation Charity!
Father Jared will be training at his normal times of 6:15am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (once he's back in town from vacation) and will be doing the "Murph" at 321 Wellness on Memorial Day bright and early at 7:30am. He'd would love to have you join him, whether at those times or on your own schedule.

DUE TO CORONAVIRUS, WE ARE CURRENTLY IN PHASE TWO OF OUR PLAN FOR FAITHFUL MINISTRY IN A PANDEMIC. Please always visit our website for the most up-to-date information: www.sjegh.com.

AGO CONCERT IN MEMORY OF FR. KENNETH: One of the many ministries of our Priest Associate who died from COVID-19 last year, Father Kenneth, was his service as chaplain to the Muskegon Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. On Friday, April 30, at 7:00pm, the Guild will premier a special virtual concert in his honor and memory on YouTube. You can watch it online here. The chapter has asked Father Cramer to take over as the new chaplain to the Chapter, and he has accepted and so will lead an invocation in the concert.

MONDAY EVENING EUCHARIST: On Monday evenings at 5:30pm, we celebrate a simple service of Holy Eucharist in in the Nave. It is a small and simple service, ideal for those who want to come to worship but not with a lot of people. The next offering is Monday, May 2. The service is also broadcast on Facebook Live here.

INTRODUCTION TO THE HEBREW BIBLE: Our Monday evening Rector's Forum  is on break for Monday, May 3, while Father Cramer is taking some time off. It will resume on Monday, May 10, at 8:00pm as we continue our Introduction to the Hebrew Bible study and turn to the book of Judges. You can join the meeting online here. If you'd like Fr. Jared to add you to the email group for updates and information on reading ahead to prepare, click here to let him know.

LECTIONARY BIBLE STUDY: This study is also on a break for Tuesday, May 4, while Father Cramer is taking some time off. However, you can join Father Cramer on Zoom at 12:15pm on Tuesday, May 11, for the weekly lectionary Bible Study as we look at the readings for the upcoming Sunday. We always wrap up by around 1pm, so it's a great study to join during a lunch break!

HOLY EUCHARIST & HEALING: Each Wednesday at Noon you are welcome to our service of Holy Eucharist with prayers for Healing in the Nave. The next offering is Wednesday, May 5. The service is also broadcast on Facebook Live here.

ROGATION PROCESSION: Join us on Monday, May 10, at 6:00pm (just following the 5:30pm Eucharist that day) for the Rogation liturgy in the Good News Garden. The Rogation Days are the three days before the Feast of the Ascension, and are days set aside for supplication and prayer, especially the blessing of seeds and gardens. At SJE we'll use the rite for the Blessing of a Garden in the Book of Occasional Services to bless our newly expanding Good News Garden. You're also invited to bring seed or seedlings from home to be blessed. Everyone will be masked, though we are outdoors, to keep it safe. You can either come to the 5:30pm Eucharist and then join the procession to the Good News Garden or you can meet the Procession at 6:00pm at the Good News Garden for the blessing.

ASCENSION DAY: Our celebration of the Ascension of our Lord will be on the 40th Day of Easter, Thursday, May 13, at 6:00pm. A principal feast of the church, it will be sung with incense and you can either sign up to attend or watch on YouTube live. Join us!
