Thuemling captures Finley Gold Pen award

Four students will share $6,000 in scholarship money for producing the best stories on deadline in the April 14 Mark Finley Gold Pen Award for Best Beginning News Writer contest. Alumni panel gives job tips to students

Five J-school grads told students how they landed their media jobs and shared career/portfolio advice. Thompson, Wildcat honored by SPJ

The Society of Professional Journalists honored Ph.D. journalism minor Rebecca Thompson and the Arizona Daily Wildcat staff in its 2020 SPJ Mark of Excellence Region 11 contest. Thompson was a finalist in sports writing for her Arizona Daily Star story on Cedric Dempsey. The Wildcat won best affiliated website and will now move onto the national competition.



Hearst honors grad for profile of dad 

Heather Rich, a 2020 graduate, placed in the top 20 nationally in the Hearst Personality/Profile Writing Competition for an essay about losing her father, Ronnie, to the coronavirus. The story, "My dad, much more than a statistic," finished 16th and was written in Prof. Ruxandra Guidi's class and published in El Inde.



Daily Star profiles high jumper Ramos  

Journalism major and UA high-jump standout Diana Ramos was profiled by the Arizona Daily Star with an April 6 story, "Ramos sets Venezuela indoor high-jump record." "I love meeting and talking to people. And writing,” Ramos told Caitlin Schmidt ('14). “And journalists know a little bit about everything. I like that."

• The Journalism Advisory Council voted in three members April 2: Paul Allvin ('93), VP for strategic communications and marketing at George Mason University; Jim Calle ('85), attorney representing U.S. Border Patrol agents; and Steve Rosenberg (’82), who owns BizTucson magazine.

• Prof. Jeannine Relly moderated the Center for Border & Global Journalism's panel "Focus on research: Media coverage of rape and sexual harassment of women in the Global South" on March 20. Watch video.

Prof. Celeste González de Bustamante moderated two Alumni Panel Series in March: “Media, the Border and Latin America,” with Kendal Blust ('16), Alex Devoid ('17) and Curt Prendergast ('11); and "Multimedia Storytelling in Unprecedented Times," with April Lanuza ('19 M.A.), Murphy Woodhouse ('14) and Luis Carlos Davis.

• Prof. Jessica Retis presented her new book, "Narratives of Migration, Relocation and Belonging: Latin Americans in London," April 15 to students in a Zoom session with co-author Patria Román-Velázquez and London journalist Arelys Goncalves.

• The Honors College selected Prof. Carol Schwalbe as one of a handful of UA professors to teach an inaugural Calderwood Seminar in Public Writing in 2021-22. 

• Prof. Susan Swanberg added a certificate in Philosophy of Science from the University of Oxford to her five degrees to help her science journalism students.

Rob Kleifield ('19) is a Minneapolis-based digital content assistant for FOX Sports North and FOX Sports Wisconsin.

Kristan Obeng ('19 M.A.) is digital editor for the Education Writers Association after leaving the Visalia (California) Times-Delta.

Nicole Santa Cruz ('09), is leaving the Los Angeles Times in May to cover marginalized communities for ProPublica.

Gabriella Vukelic ('17) was promoted to social media editor at Newsday on Long Island, New York.

Janice Yu ('13) of FOX 5 in Atlanta made a video guide to help broadcasters pronounce the names of the Asian victims of the March 16 spa shootings. Story
