BPD Mini Conference in May
BPD Awareness Month is held in the USA and UK during May. In Australia we celebrate BPD Awareness Week during the first week of October. In the spirit of collaboration, the Foundation is holding a Mini-Conference in May with Dr. Carla Sharp, Professor of Psychology at Uni of Houston. She will present ‘state-of-the-science’ information on the conceptualisation of personality challenges in adolescents. Details and Register
BPD Core Competency Workshops - NT & ACT (June)
Fully-funded Core Competency Workshops for clinicians are rolling out across Australia from March-June 2021 after being delayed by COVID-19 restrictions last year. In the event of future travel restrictions, face-to-face workshops will be delivered via Zoom. These 2-day workshops form Stage 3 of the National BPD Training Strategy. 5 Challenges for Young People with Personality Disorders
Orygen's HYPE research team found 5 barriers to adequate and timely care -delayed diagnosis, failure to access/engage in treatment, delay in implementation of evidence-based treatments, innovation failure in therapies and lack of focus on social connectedness and functional recovery. Read more
Using Art Therapy to support people living with BPD
Research on the use of Art Therapy for BPD has shown reductions in self harm, a higher tolerance for distress, and motivated participants. This paper published by the Australian, New Zealand and Asia Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA) shows how art therapists enable people to visually express 'self' and externalise pain in a safe and accepting space. Wellbeing Activities
Small Steps recently launched wellbeing activities for people feeling disrupted, disconnected or distressed. Though not BPD specific, some people may find the activities useful. A Toolbox provides resources to help people centre themselves, providing space to reflect and get clarity on what has happened and how to best respond. It is also a useful source for friends and whānau (family) and mental health services. View website
Coping Strategies
This new fact sheet from Blue Knot Foundation outlines how people use coping strategies when faced with challenges due to their trauma. The fact sheet is useful for survivors, as well as others, to help better understanding how some coping strategies can have an impact on their behaviours in daily life. Easy Read Mental Health Resources
The Dept of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (3DN) at Uni of NSW has launched some 'Easy Read' information sheets on accessing mental health services in NSW. The Fact sheets are for people with intellectual disability, cognitive and communication challenges, their family and support persons. A template is available so services can modify the 'Introduction to inpatient mental health services' document to suit their needs. Read more
Telehealth extended to 31 December 2021
Federal funding to allow all people access to telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic was due to end on June 30. Minister Greg Hunt said "The extensions will ensure that Australians can continue to see their GP, renew scripts and seek mental health support from the safety of their own home." Read more

Research - How are the Australian NHMRC BPD Guidelines Faring in Practice?
This research paper by Jessica Proctor et al., investigates how Australian consumer perspectives on BPD management have changed over time. Responses from surveys conducted in 2011 and 2017 were analysed for common themes that aligned with the NHMRC Guidelines published in 2013. Findings suggested that awareness of BPD was improved, however widespread implementation of the Guidelines was not evident. Read more
