Hennepin County Blueline Extension Seeking Input from Community Members

Hennepin County recently released revised route options for the planned METRO Blueline Extension, which will connect communities from Downtown Minneapolis northwest to Brooklyn Park.

These routes are intended to advance a conversation many years in the making with the goal of identifying a single community-supported route by the end of this year to advance into an official design. Asian Media Access has collaborated with the County to collect the feedbacks, and we like to hear from YOU through:

Collecting Anti-Racism Stories for Asian Children

Asian Media Access is resuming video production at the SPNN Studio. We will produce a series of video testimonies to guide Asian American children and teens on how to face racism acts, and to bounce back with more resiliency through cultural practices and support!

Each month, we will invite 6 Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders, artists and influencers to guest in the studio.

They can either retell an Asian folktales, sing a song dedicated to children, or give testimonies on how they dealt with racism when they were young.

We invite YOU to join us to inspire more discussion for the next generation!

A Sense of Urgency and Disparity

With the COVID-19 continue to sweep across the globe, and MN continues to be in the CDC’s top-15 state COVID-19 watch list, Asian Media Access is making an urgent plead to our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, to get vaccinated ASAP, and to get tested for COVID-19 every 2 weeks. It is not just a public health issue, it has been known, and is an EQUITY ISSUE for our AAPIs, because the pandemic impacts our communities so disproportionately.

For example, unemployment rate increased by more than 450% from Feb to June in 2020, revealing a greater rate of increase than any other racial groups, because Asian-owned businesses were overrepresented in some of the hardest-hit sectors. Asian-owned businesses make up 26% of accommodations and food services, 17% of retail trades, and 11% of education-services businesses (“Employment Status by Race,” from US Bureau of Labor Statistics, updated July 2, ’20). It is very important to urge our AAPIs to take extra effort to receive and promote vaccination, because our economic needs depend on it.

Below shows some devastating data for our diverse AAPI sub groups, as examples:

• Nearly a third of the nurses who have died of coronavirus in the United States are Filipino/Filipinx, according to the National Nurses United, even though Filipino/Filipinx nurses make up just 4.5% of the nursing workforce nationwide.

• According to the Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL)’s Report (04/15/2021), 49% of all Asian COVID-19 deaths in Minnesota were from the Hmong community alone, disproportionately higher compared to the mortality rates among white Minnesotans. Hmong, Karen, and Karenni COVID-19 death markedly ranked the highest in the City of St. Paul, MN.

• According to Asian Media Access’ Weekly COVID-19 Report (04/22/2021), in MN we only have 1,799 Pacific Islanders, but already having 623 members (35%) infected by COVID-19, and it is 2.4 times easier in contracting the virus, and 6.8 times more likely to be hospitalized than white Minnesotans.

• According to the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association in Houston, the coronavirus has ravaged much of the low-income Vietnamese community in Houston, as large families live together in smaller areas, and when one person contracts the virus, the entire household is affected.

AAPI communities have high vaccine hesitancy due to many reasons, such as lack of information or misinformation, or the cultural way of thinking that natural infection is preferable to vaccination. In general, Asian American’s physical size is more petite compared to the Western physiques, many are afraid that the vaccine doses may be too strong for Asian’s physical constitution (tizhi 体质). Also due to Asian belief, that “Sickness is a Natural Part of Life,” injecting chemical to induce immune system is unnatural. Such cultural philosophy is acceptable when infection disease is not severe, therefore many Asian seniors practice that natural infection is preferable than vaccination. But with the devastating infection rate in our AAPI communities, such SEVERITY should be taken into consideration when making a decision to get vaccinated.

Also according to the Islamic Center of America, Asian Muslim can get vaccinated during RAMADAN, since vaccines do not invalidate fasting, and vaccine formulas don’t contain food substances or vitamin issues. Often our AAPI communities do not realize that in order to achieve herd immunity to combat COVID-19, we need 74% of the population to be vaccinated. So in order for our communities to take this big step to get vaccinated, we need to start at the beginner’s level – explain what vaccine is, how it works, and why it's so important to get vaccinated during the COVID-19 crisis. We need every Asian media outlet and every community-based agency to present as a unified-front, so no matter where or when AAPI members turn for help - the access point for vaccination would be consistent and accessible and such information can be trusted.

Therefore, AMA has planned for an outdoor AAPI community-wide event in May. The intent for this event is for our communities need to get information directly from the trusted sources, and take proper actions to protect themselves and families.

Youth Spotlight: Ruby Yang

The Cultural Brokers program

comprised a diverse group of youth, each with a unique cultural background and passion for creativity. As a strong advocate for her Chinese-American community, Ruby Yang joined the Cultural Brokers Program in October 2020 to further bridge disconnection, instill inspiration, and create positive change in her community.

Throughout the Cultural Broker’s program, Ruby gained an enhanced outlook on her Chinese-American identity as well as learning greater ways to connect with people who are also living biculturally.

Ruby states, “Our cultural broker internship team was wonderfully diverse and I learned a lot about the different cultures of my teammates”. Not only was Ruby able to find the balance between her host and heritage culture, she was able to elevate her experience by taking inspiration from other peers and their cultures.

In the Cultural Brokers Program, youth design and publish meaningful content such as postcards and animation videos. The youth were encouraged to use both English and their heritage languages. Ruby states, “In my day-to-

day life, I don't really get to use Chinese much so it's really nice to be able to apply it in my designs. Although sometimes I would have to tweak the message so it would flow better and accommodate our culture”. One of the challenges was that direct translation did not always have the same literal meaning. Common English phrases did not consistently translate naturally or appropriately and required Ruby to research the best phrasing. In doing this research, Ruby strengthened her connection and interaction with her heritage culture. She especially learned to embrace her two cultures rather than losing a part of her identity and conforming completely to her host culture.

Although she found benefits in her day to day, Ruby designing attention-grabbing content in two different languages also allows for a greater audience reach. Seeing a design in a language that people understand resonates with them better. Overall, it provides more interest, engagement, and connection. Ruby’s postcard designs would most influence the Chinese-American community, especially appealing to the younger demographic just like her. It is important that communities see information that promotes good healthy habits. “From the start of the program, Ruby has had very strong designs...The one piece that stood out the most out of the rest would be her mental health postcard. The postcard also won first place for best postcard created out of 500+ postcards” - Linh Nguyen, Asian Media Access. Being a part of the AMA Cultural Broker's program has motivated Ruby to create meaningful content for her community, more than just for herself.

During and outside of her academic studies, Ruby enjoys learning about Health equity, including cultural distinctions and perspective. Ruby states, “Health is a fundamental human right and it's very unfortunate things like different socioeconomic backgrounds will result in differences in the level of care”. In the next few years, Ruby will complete her bachelor's degree in Biology of Global Health, attend medical school, and plans to address the gap in health equity. She is looking forward to gaining more interpersonal and technical skills that can be applied towards helping her community. Ruby believes that it is important to address the lack of diversity, inclusion, and representation for all backgrounds as it may lead to alienation from peers.

COVID-19 vaccines will be offered on a bus that has been made into a mobile vaccine clinic. The special bus has all the same equipment and cleanliness as a regular vaccination site. The mobile vaccine clinic is a safe space for everyone that comes right to a spot near you. SEWA-AIFW staff and volunteers will be at the event and can answer any questions before and during the bus visit.

Everyone that arrives for an appointment will be able to get the vaccine. To meet the needs of all people, please note that some vaccines may be administered outside of the bus. All staff are trained and able to do this.

The vaccine is completely free. You will not be asked for ID or insurance.

The Color of Drinking: How Alcohol Culture Affects College Students of Color

Alcohol prevention efforts often focus on reducing high-risk drinking among high-risk drinking population. For years, this was true at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After surveying students and finding that students of color are some of the lowest-risk drinkers, University staff wanted to investigate the impact alcohol culture has on students of color. To that end, they created the Color of Drinking survey, and used it along with an analysis of social media to gain better perspective on this question.

Knowing this, UW–Madison decided to investigate the impact of its alcohol culture on students of color through the Color of Drinking Survey in 2015 and 2017. Findings from both surveys will be discussed in this session.

This webinar will examine the intersection of alcohol prevention and social justice and strategies implemented with UW–Madison campus partners to create a more inclusive environment and present key findings from this exploratory study.

As part of More Resilient Minnesota initiative, some communities have used the 100 Cups of Coffee process to elevate the voices of community members who are not always “at the table”. The process involves one-on-one conversations with community members to learn about their perceptions of, and experiences with, both community assets and challenges. This is a way to gathering community input to drive community resilience planning. 100 Cups of Coffee supports partnerships with a range of community members, as well as creating opportunities for leadership development. Beltrami and Robbinsdale are two communities that have successfully utilized this process. This is a valuable and practical tool for building community capacity in the journey towards community well-being.
