Introducing VIDEA's Decolonization Action Plan for Organisations

The Decolonization Action Plan is a resource developed by Indigenous staff at VIDEA, which supports organizations to have critical conversation, and to develop and implement plans to decolonize their operations, systems, programmes and governance structures.

"The following are suggestions of actions that organisations can take as part of building and implementing their own decolonization plan. This list is not exhaustive. As an organisation, we have spent the past several years implementing some of these actions. We have come a long way. We have a long way to go. These actions have stretched and challenged us. They should stretch and challenge you. They should unsettle us all."

Learn where you fit in the system of settler-colonization and how you can use your privilege and your power to support and uplift the Indigenous people that you’re surrounded by. Be open and giving and caring, and have a genuine sense of curiosity and respect for Indigenous people.

- Kate Herchak, VIDEA's Indigenous Governance Advisor
The Decolonization Action Plan complements the Decolonization Toolkit and Facilitator Guide released last summer. We talked about these resources, and our Indigenous Governance Advisor, Kate Herchak, who worked with a team of Indigenous staff to create these resources, in a previous newsletter. You can check it out here: Introducing Our New Decolonization Toolkit.
These resources are designed to spark conversation and growth personally, professionally, organizationally, or community wide and can be used in full or as modules.

Decolonization Workshops

We have developed a series of decolonization workshops and services to help international development organisations on their decolonisation and reconciliation journeys. While we prefer to tailor this work directly to individual organisations, broadly the work we are doing includes:

  • Historical overview and contemporary realities of colonization workshop
  • Decolonization 101 workshop – what is it and why is it important
  • Personalized decolonisation workshops to meet individual needs and realities of organizations
  • Focused readings groups on the TRC and MMIWG Inquiry reports
  • Assistance in identifying, aligning with, and measuring organizational work against Calls to Action and Calls to Justice
  • Policy review and consultation and strategic planning that aligns with decolonizationgoals
  • One to one and group mentorship for ED’s/CEO’s
  • Support for Boards
  • Connection with Indigenous youth and Elders

We are taking a decolonization approach to pricing so that we can appropriately value our time and efforts and also meet the needs of interested organizations so that these are services that are accessible to all regardless of size or financial restraints.
