We have sadly lost Jill Fellerman, our Wheel Easy Secretary, after an inoperable recurrence of the cancer she had 6 years ago. Jill dealt with her illness in a truly strong and uncomplaining way, and we will all miss her enormously.

Jill joined Wheel Easy on our very first ride. She was fairly new to Harrogate, having come up from London to take up a new role at Harrogate Library. She had already become a seasoned urban cyclist in London where she met Nick at the London Cycling Campaign. She quickly found the camaraderie of regular Wheel Easy rides around our beautiful North Yorkshire to be an inspiration to go further and faster. She joined the committee from the outset and took on the role of secretary. She kept this role right up until last year, providing great support and efficiency to each of the chairs that she worked with. She led rides, and until a few years ago was often the only female riding with the long ride. She always took her turn in leading and finding new routes and cafes.
We had a Saturday morning group which was mainly sociable and cafe bound and as her friends got older and slower, she thrived by joining Cappuccino which added new skills of riding with a group and a new set of friends.
She retained her loyalty to Wheel Easy for Sunday rides, on retirement on Wednesdays and on many trips in Yorkshire and our ride from Harrogate to Edinburgh.
We joked on rides as she placated us by telling us there would be only one more hill! The hills went on and one of the finest rides on the Wheel Easy ride calendar is named after her, Jill’s Hills. A fine tribute to a remarkable woman, a gifted cyclist, our friend.
Jill’s funeral will take place next Tuesday, 4 May. For people wishing to attend to pay repects to Jill, the hearse will leave from outside her house at 36 Cheltenham Mount at 12-30pm. Cyclists have two options:
- They can follow the hearse: Eastwards along Cheltenham Mount towards ASDA, south up East Parade past Odeon, past old police station to Knaresborough Rd and Empress roundabout and down Wetherby Rd.
- Alternatively, they can congregate outside the Wetherby Road gates of Stonefall cemetery or on the extensive layby opposite on other side of Wetherby Road. The hearse will arrive between 12.45 and 12.55pm

Club rides in Groups of 6 have restarted on Sundays with a full selection of Routes on the Website and on Wednesdays with Medium and Short routes. Members are encouraged to give them a try and it is hoped with the improving weather, the expanding vaccination programme and the consequent receding threat of the virus numbers will increase. It is still necessary to register beforehand for Test & Trace purposes but it is straight forward and doesn't matter if you register and then don't go. Registration is on the Website Test and Trace and please remember that all rides are self lead so check you are are familiar with the route.

Away Days are to restart during the summer in line with the Government's timetable. Details on the website.
Short Awaydays Rides
The Short rides, say 15 to 25 miles, starting from Hornbeam are necessarily limited in the variety of route and destinations which might be reached. In order to improve variety, it is proposed to include short away day rides in the ride calendar. These will be rides of a similar length and pace, but starting initially from places such as Boroughbridge, Tadcaster, Easingwold and Ripon.
The broad idea is that rides will be in groups of around 7, including a leader.
The calendar entry will ask anyone interested to register so that numbers can be managed.
