The Ontario government is launching a new COVID-19 Safety Campaign for the month of May.

Provincial offences officers will be visiting hundreds of manufacturing and food processing facilities, warehouses and distribution centres focusing their efforts in Toronto, Hamilton, Durham, York, Halton and Hamilton Regions.

They will be promoting and enforcing the COVID-19 safety requirements under the Reopening Ontario Act (ROA). Officers will be reviewing the following requirements during their visits:

  • COVID-19 safety plans
  • Screening of workers and visitors
  • Masking
  • Physical distancing
  • Hygiene practices
  • COVID-19 safety in the lunch and break rooms
The goal is to help these businesses stay safe and stay open, and stop the spread of COVID-19 by improving compliance with the COVID-19 safety requirements.

Upon arrival, officers will identify themselves and the purpose of their visit: To help business understand the COVID-19 safety requirements and enforce, where necessary, the requirements under ROA.

Officers will ask to meet with a person in charge and a worker (if available).
The visit will be conducted primarily in the office and lunch/break room. Entry and/or travel through the workplace will be limited.

Where non-compliance is found, officers will refer the workplace for a follow-up inspection and/or use enforcement tools.

All businesses will be emailed a report following the visit with relevant information and resources regarding:
  • Safety plans (that include plans to: train and instruct workers; implement and update screening procedures; control the risk of COVD-19 transmission; respond to a positive case or potential exposure; manage any new risks caused by changes to the way a business operates; make sure the plan is working)
  • Screening
  • Masking
  • Disinfection and cleaning
  • Infectious Disease Emergency Leave (IDEL) and paid COVID-19 sick days
  • Supports for small business
