Tonight, the Edison 64
Of the 58,279 names inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, 64 went to Edison High School in Philadelphia. Tonight, we talk with Richard Sands, who wrote the book about the Edison 64, and Al Longden, who served as a staff sergeant in the 1st Special Forces Group. We’ll discuss why some communities got hit so hard with KIAs, and some escaped with relatively few. For a detailed breakdown of the Names on the Wall, check out Bill Abbott’s excellent article from 1993.

Wednesday, We Remember 1980’s Operation Eagle Claw, the Failed Iranian Hostage Rescue Attempt
Join us Wednesday morning at 9:00am, when Air Force veteran Jake Barsottini will share memories of April 24, 1980, when a joint Special Operations force launched a hostage rescue attempt in Iran. The day ended with eight Americans dead, several destroyed aircraft, and an aborted mission. The failure helped to doom the Carter Administration and inspired a top-to-bottom rethinking of how Special Operations are planned and conducted. Ren Bergman will also join us to talk about his experiences as a Fleet Marine aboard command ships during the Vietnam War. Join on Zoom →

The Sergeant Major of the Army Asked Army Vets Why They Got Out. The Answers Came Fast and Furious.
There’s only one Sergeant Major of the Army, who serves as spokesperson for all enlisted soldiers. Last week, SMA Michael Grinston asked on Twitter, “What were some of the most preventable reasons you’ve seen a Soldier leave the Army over?” The answers ranged from “toxic leadership” and “twenty years of war” to “lack of family support” and "treating injuries with Motrin and indifference." An Army veteran Reddit page took up the question with hundreds chiming in. SMA Grinston has since asked Army leaders “to dig into the comments” and start working on solutions.
