DPA's Information Exchange - 8 May 2021


In this week's Info Exchange:

Transport workshops - Wellington, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Whangarei, Hamilton

We are continuing with the series of workshops  being held around the country to hear disabled people's experiences of transport and Total Mobility. We are now reaching out to people to take part in workshops in Wellington, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Whangarei and Hamilton.

DPA together with transport consultancy MRCagney, are conducting research on behalf of Waka Kotahi, NZ Transport Agency, titled "Understanding the transport experiences of disabled people, determining what barriers exist for people wanting to use Total Mobility and exploring new opportunities".

All workshop participants will be offered a $20 koha for participating, in the form of vouchers. If you require financial assistance with transport costs to attend any of these workshop, please get in touch - paul.brown@dpa.org.nz.


Wellington Workshop

This in-person workshop is for disabled people from Wellington, with any type of impairment. It will be co-facilitated by Isabella Cawthorn, of Confluence Consulting, and Paul Brown from DPA.

Palmerston North Workshop

This in-person workshop is for disabled people from Palmerston North, with any type of impairment. It will be co-facilitated by Isabella Cawthorn, of Confluence Consulting, and Claudia Christensen from DPA.

The Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA) New Zealand is Aotearoa’s membership-based pan-impairment Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), our governance and staff members are predominantly disabled people based around the country.
 
We have a vision of a society that provides equity and maximum opportunity for all people. Our work includes promoting opportunities for participation by disabled people, working with communities, and giving advice to local and national government. We work within a human rights framework and in particular we honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
 
Mahi Tika - Equity in Employment is a disabled-led employment programme developed by Disabled Persons Assembly (DPA) New Zealand. Mahi Tika — Equity in Employment is running in the Waikato region until August 2022.
 
We are seeking a Kaitiaki who will mentor participants by identifying their individual competencies and capabilities and enhance their journey into meaningful and sustainable employment. Kaitiaki also facilitate connections with potential employers.  
 
We are interested in hearing from people with the relevant skills for this work. We are flexible with the number of hours you can work, up to 40 hours per week, with the possibility of job sharing.
 
We are keen to hear from you if you:

  • have knowledge of the UNCRPD, NZ Disability Strategy and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • have knowledge of the disabled community at local, regional, national levels
  • have understanding of and commitment to a disability rights approach
  • have an ability to work to project timelines and prepare progress reports
  • have well-developed relationship building and management skills
  • have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • identify as disabled
  • are based in the Waikato region

Disability rights - two day education programme


Kia Noho Rangatira Ai Tātou is an education programme that builds understanding of disabled people’s rights and self-determination, from the unique cultural context of Aotearoa.
 
This workshop will be useful for disabled people, family/whānau and those working with disabled people either in the sector or wider community. The workshop is led by disabled people.

Housing report launch

A research report, 'Where will we live in the Future – Research into the Unmet Needs of People with Disabilities, their Family and Whānau' will be launched in Auckland on 11 May.

All are welcome to attend the launch event which will present the results of a research project conducted throughout 2020.

The event is hosted by the Community Housing Collective: Disability Connect, ME Family Services, Otara Health Charitable Trust, Complex Care Group, YesDisability, Children’s Autism Foundation, IHC, Cerebral Palsy Association, Te Manawa Respite Care, and Auckland Disability Law.


When:  10.30am -11.30am, Tuesday 11 May

 Ōtara Music Arts Centre (OMAC), 48 Fair Mall, Ōtara, Auckland
