Schedule of Meetings

Sunday, May 9     HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional protocols are in place to ensure healthy at work standards while still allowing for public comment. The meetings will be held via video teleconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency because it is not feasible to offer a primary physical location for the meeting. You may view the meeting on LexTV spectrum channel 185, Metronet channel 3, Windstream channels 3 and 20, or via live stream.

Residents may choose to make a public comment in one of two ways:

  1. Register to speak during a zoom meeting
  2. Submit a written comment to be entered into the official meeting record.

Speakers must sign up online or call (859) 258-3155 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

* The deadline to register to speak during public comment is noon the day prior to the meeting.

The registration link and listed process are for Urban County Council work sessions and council meetings only.

Please note, Council voted to return to in-person meetings after their Summer Recess on Tuesday, August 10, 2021

Traffic signals on West Short Street will be changing

Two traffic signals on West Short Street will be converted from timed lights to flashing four-way stops between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. The change, at the intersections of North Mill and North Upper streets, will take effect at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 10.

Traffic Engineering Director Jeff Neal says the change is designed to better serve all travel modes during lower vehicle travel times.

“We think the change will serve motorists and pedestrians alike,” says Nancy Albright, Commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. “That area has a high pedestrian count in evening hours. The flashing signals should allow pedestrians to pass through the intersections more efficiently and more safely.”

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution while traffic adapts to the new traffic control measures.

Public input need on Task Force’s draft report

The Task Force on Neighborhoods in Transition has completed its work after almost 3 years since its conception. The group comprised of Urban County Councilmembers, city developers, planners, historians, residents and other community members has met monthly, with a brief pause during the COVID pandemic, to discuss the complicated topics of infill and redevelopment, preservation and gentrification. The Task Force’s goal was to identify ways to protect vulnerable residents from the negative impact of neighborhood redevelopment and transformation.

In addition to welcoming public comment at nearly all of their regular meetings, the Task Force hosted two city-wide community forums. In lieu of having a final in-person forum and in an effort to not put the public at risk, the Task Force seeks community input via survey. Specifically, the survey requests input on two reports, the TFNT Report, which includes the recommendations and a map report, Maps of Vulnerabilities to Displacement.

Link to Reports:

The survey includes links to the draft report and the Task Force google drive, which includes past meeting packets, resources, maps and meeting summaries. Residents are able to complete the survey until Friday, May 14, 2021. After the window closes, the Task Force will review all submissions and make any necessary revisions to the report. The Task Force expects to submit the final report to Urban County Council by early summer.

On Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Kentucky First Lady Britainy Beshear and Kroger stores will host this year’s annual “Shop and Share”, a one-day community event that benefits the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s 15 regional domestic violence shelters.

Grocery shoppers are invited to SHOP for what they need and SHARE an item that will be given to a local domestic violence program. Volunteers will be onsite at many Kroger locations to share their local program’s shopping list OR shoppers can access a mobile list via the Shop and Share QR Code displayed on signs throughout the store.

All donations directly help domestic violence programs provide life-saving shelter and supportive services to the women, men, and children in Kentucky who seek crisis intervention as well as assistance in rebuilding their lives after abuse.

Over the past eleven years, more than $5 million in goods and monetary donations have been raised for the 15 domestic violence shelter programs that make up the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Domestic violence survivors who need help can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE or the KCADV main line at 502-209-5382. They can also visit the KCADV Get Help Now webpage for a list of shelters across Kentucky and their direct contact information.

To report all non-emergency matters, call Lexington Police at 859-258-3600. While they may not respond immediately due to other higher priority calls, it will allow for them to know how frequently it is occurring. I am aware of this issue occurring on several trails in the district and have been in contact with Parks and Recreation and the sector commander. Additional patrols have been requested in an effort to keep everyone safe.

Coldstream Master Plan
Thanks for meeting with us! What’s next?

On Wednesday, April 28th, Councilmember Plomin and I joined the project team to discuss the progress of the Coldstream Master Plan Project with the community. We had 54 attendees from the surrounding neighborhood and Lexington. During the meeting, the team updated the meeting participants with information about the current project efforts and heard a lot of great and valuable feedback from the community.

We had a series of polling questions throughout the meeting that we’ve recreated as a digital survey you can fill out or share. You can find the presentation slides here.

If you could not attend the meeting, make sure to add your ideas and comments on the feedback tab of the site www.ColdstreamMasterPlan.com or participate in our survey. Thank you!

Imagine Nicholasville Road public hearing

After over a year of study, data collection and public input, a vision has been put forward for Nicholasville Road, one of Lexington’s most important corridors. The result is a concept that focuses on safety and efficiency for people traveling by car, bus, bike or on foot. The recommendations are tailored to the unique areas of Nicholasville Road and include:

  • Innovative intersection improvements.
  • Consideration of Bus Rapid Transit.
  • Possible future redevelopment of large parking lots and underutilized shopping centers.
  • Dedicated bike and pedestrian facilities.

This cohesive corridor concept is known as Imagine Nicholasville Road and it could be adopted as part of the City’s comprehensive plan (Imagine Lexington). It will influence incremental land use and transportation decisions for the next 20 years through future redevelopment, Planning Commission actions, Urban County Council decisions and public investment.

The document can be viewed at ImagineNicholasvilleRoad.org.

There will be a public hearing via Zoom for this proposal on May 20, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. Community members with thoughts on the proposal who cannot attend the public hearing can email imagine@lexingtonky.gov and comments will be passed along to the Planning Commission.

Scavenger Hunt for Kids’ Sake will be Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass' first-ever hybrid fundraising event, with options to participate either in person outdoors or virtually depending on the participant’s comfort level.

The public in-person event will be held at Red Mile Race Track on June 5, 2021. The virtual event will be held the same dates over Zoom, and participants can take part wherever they are!

Participants will mostly only interact with the members of their team, as tasks (answering questions, taking photos, submitting videos, etc.) will be completed through an app called Eventzee, which is available for download through the App Store and Google Play Store.

We will be following the recommended protocols of wearing masks, being socially distanced, limiting the number of people at the venue at one time, etc.

Both in-person and virtual participants will have a 1-hour timeframe to complete as many tasks as possible with their team, which will vary depending on their location.

Teams will be made up of 4-6 people and the fundraising structure will still be similar to Bowl for Kids’ Sake, wherein participants will begin fundraising in the weeks leading up to the event.

Teams will be awarded points for both fundraising and completing tasks this year, which will make it a bit more competitive (and hopefully, more fun!).
