Gatewood scholars learn the science of brewing maple syrup

Gatewood Elementary scholars brewed something sweet last month. After the second grade class tapped two sugar maple trees on the Gatewood property, the rest of the school was invited to help finish turning the sap into syrup. Scholars tested their might physically and mentally using a variety of tools to engage in the scientific process.

Gatewood continues to be a beacon of outdoor learning innovation as they tap into their school's natural resources! More

Hopkins junior highs keep students connected during a time of distance

Throughout the year, as our junior highs navigated different levels of distance learning and hybrid models, several virtual communities were developed to help students feel connected to school. This was especially important for seventh-grade students, who began the year in a school they had not physically entered. Offering connection and community, these virtual spaces also allowed students to explore their passions. More

Former Royal supports educators through nonprofit

Hopkins alumni Josh Thelemann is the founder and CEO of Teacher Prodigy, a nonprofit that supports the growth of educators. After realizing that some teachers and students had little say in the curriculum, he found a way to leverage their expertise in order to make effective change.

Josh was highlighted in our March 2021 issue of the Update newsletter. More

Post Spring Break Reminders for Those Who Traveled

As a reminder, if you traveled last week, Hopkins Public Schools strongly recommends that you and your scholars test for COVID 3-5 days upon your return to Minnesota — this also applies to those who are fully vaccinated. This recommendation is based on guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the CDC. You can find free COVID-19 saliva testing sites here.

The Minnesota Department of Health also recommends that unvaccinated individuals who traveled quarantine for a period of 14 days after returning to Minnesota. While Hopkins Public Schools will not be able to monitor the travel or self-quarantining activities of our families and staff, we do ask that those who traveled consider the community spread in the area they visited, their ability to socially distance during their stay, and whether their close contacts have had the opportunity to get vaccinated.

Quarantining is not recommended for those who received their second vaccination more than two weeks before travel.

Where We All Belong: Building an Anti-Racist World

On March 25, junior high principals Julius Eromosele and Leanne Kampfe engaged in a discussion about navigating conversations on race and racism with tweens and teens. The conversation was facilitated by two Hopkins High School scholars. Topics included microaggressions, tricky situations, and the relationship between home and school in the context of anti-racism work. You can watch the session by clicking the image above.
