Caritas is coming

The eve of Pentecost is a great time to be  launching Caritas in the Diocese of Nottingham.  I hope you'll join us for an online celebration on 22 May to mark the moment.  Booking is now open, as you will see in this edition of Grapevine.

From Pentecost, Caritas will be our diocesan network for charity, justice, peace and care for creation.  It will be embedded in the global Caritas family, and yet local to every parish and individual here in the East Midlands.

In fact in building our diocesan Caritas, we've been guided throughout by the principle that 'together, we are Caritas' - you, me, and all of us.  So as we launch Caritas we will also launch Friends in Caritas, the network through which we make common cause to live the Gospel.

In many countries Caritas is the Church's humanitarian agency both at home and abroad.  In England and Wales CAFOD is the Bishops' agency working abroad; Caritas will work for the common good of people here in the Diocese, whatever their faith.

See you at Pentecost!
Paul (Programme Leader for Social Action)

  • form new friendships, renew old ones, and help to build our parish communities for mission.

Open with Care

Resuming parish life in the 'new normal'

In late June the government hopes to relax the restrictions that have prevented most parish activities taking place.  It will be the moment when many parish facilities and groups can start up again.

Open with Care on 2 June will help you ensure that your church premises and the things that happen in it are as safe and healthy as possible, and fulfil the government guidance.

We'll be joined by Catherine Scholes from the diocesan property office.  Having guided us through lockdown, she'll now be helping us make plans to re-open.

Join forces for justice

Paul Bodenham writes...

Do you long for a more just and sustainable world?  Let's get together, here in the Diocese of Nottingham, and build it together.

I'm delighted that the Justice and Peace Commission has secured funding from CAFOD to take forward the work of 'Justice and Peace' under the banner of Caritas.  We're building a new network of people with a passion for global justice rooted in the Gospel.  Join us and you will be in at the start!

Anyone is welcome - contact me simply by replying to this email.  Introduce yourself and let me know if you have any particular concerns and interests.  I'll then look for a date when we can all get together online in the summer.

We're particularly interested in reaching adults under 55.  If that's you, research has found that you're probably in a slice of society that cares deeply about equality, the environment and the UK's place in the world.  However work and family responsibilities may mean that you are likely to be frustrated in acting on them for lack of time.

So our plan is to work together across generations.  If you're over 55, this is why we need you too!  And if you know someone younger than you who's waiting for this invitation, please forward it to them!

Renewing the face of the Earth
An online Laudato Si' workshop for care of Creation

Tuesday 8 June, 7.00 - 8.30 p.m.

Join a workshop to hear afresh Pope Francis' call to ecological conversion. We'll explore how his encyclical Laudato Si' inspires and challenges us, as individuals, in our parishes, and across the diocese as a whole.

With the COP26 climate summit coming up in November, 2021 is a crucial year for the poor, future generations and the other species who share the Earth with us.

It's also the year when we plan to launch an ambitious environmental policy for the diocese.  Join us to help shape it, and join the journey to being a more sustainable Church.

The programme includes:
  • The opportunity to become a Pioneer Parishes plotting the journey to zero carbon
  • Signing your parish up for the Livesimply programme from CAFOD
  • An introduction to Global Healing and other parish resources
  • Headlines from our emerging diocesan environmental policy
  • And meet our intrepid trainee Laudato Si Animators!

Thanks to Sr Elizabeth at the Poor Clares' Convent, Bulwell, for the image of St Francis, patron saint of all who care for Creation.

Do you have a spare room in Nottingham?
Do you have a heart to help homeless young people?
Do you enjoy meeting new people?

Then  join an online session to find out how you can help.

Tuesday 15 June, 7.30 p.m.

Nottingham Open Homes are looking for friendly and welcoming volunteer hosts to provide accommodation for homeless young people, with one of their schemes.

With Nottingham Nightstop you could provide emergency overnight placements on a night-by-night basis, responding to the immediate crisis when a young person becomes homeless.

With Supported Lodgings you could offer accommodation for 6-12 months, in return for rent and a contribution towards utility bills, backed up with a dedicated worker from Nottingham Open Homes.

This session will give you more information about how the two schemes work and what impact they have on the young people who have accessed the services. There will also be an opportunity to meet some of our current hosts and to ask any questions you may have.
