First night hotel room service meal: Burger, chips & glass (who am I kidding) of Shiraz

Hello travellers,

When I'm not writing for the blog, I'm writing essays at the moment for my university studies.

Full hotels, not so full flight

My flight between Sydney and Adelaide was about 60% full. We even got away and arrived early. That's the upside of empty skies.

My hotel in Adelaide on the other hand is full, and I was lucky to get a room.

Taj Mahal, India, 2015

What happened last week?

Suspended flights, suspended borders was the theme of last week, except in Adelaide where I cut in front of the State Premier Steve Marshall prior to a Qantas announcement.

With a not fully understood COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney, the usual suspects - WA and Qld limited their borders. New Zealand got the wobbles as well, and suspended flights between Sydney and New Zealand.

On the other hand, I got to review an old favourite - The Westin Melbourne. Rex, Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas decided to have a fare war on the Sydney – Melbourne route, Qantas wheedled more money out of state governments to house their workforce where they are, and Scotty our Prime Minister will re-start repatriation flights from India after 15 May.

View for EOS at SkyCity with the Interncontinental to the right, Casino/Train station foreground, and the new yet-to-open Adelaide Sofitel - that blackish upright in the centre.

What's coming up?

It will be bum-up and head-down in the 2PAXfly household for the next few weeks. I don' remember university requiring so many assignments the last time I studied.

My reward will be a week in Tasmania.

Until then, mask up, keep your distance, and if you can and get vaccinated.

Stephen

By 2paxfly on May 08, 2021 09:00 am

Adelaide has always punched above its weight when it comes to food and dining. This week saw the opening of Fugazzi on the old Rigoni’s site in Leigh Street. Rigoni’s had been there as long as I can remember – in fact 60-ish years! Fugazzi comes to you from the people who brought us Nido […]

By 2paxfly on May 07, 2021 04:25 pm

Weird thing happened today when I was heading to the Adelaide Qantas Club. There were a bunch or press cameras. Something I should be used to, I know. But I was not the focus. They were for Steve Marshall, Premier of South Australia to announce with Alan Joyce that a bunch of (5) Embraer E190 […]

QANTAS: Headquarters Status Quo – QANTAS in Sydney, Jetstar in Melbourne

By 2paxfly on May 06, 2021 11:45 am

Qantas is very good at what it does. And that includes ‘negotiating’ concessions with governments. Background Last year in September, during the height of the COVID-19 related unemployment and travel industry downturn, Qantas announced that it was reviewing all of its property portfolios, and that might include moving its headquarters if the state governments’ financial […]

Review Hotel: The Westin Melbourne, Victoria

By 2paxfly on May 03, 2021 09:33 am

Now more than 20 years old, the Westin Hotel, at City Square, Melbourne, is still a very elegant hotel with a superb location, designed with large rooms decorated in a restrained colour palette of greys, dark blues, with sand-coloured tiled bathrooms, white porcelain, and marble benchtops. For a businessman, you are at the ‘Paris’ end […]
