Greetings Ward 8 Residents,

We are faced with challenges as it relates to youth and young adult services. We understand that the lack of programs and services for our young people is one of the critical issues that has led to gun violence in our ward.

Last evening, May 10th, I hosted a Youth Summer Planning Meeting, which was a proactive approach to provide our young people with a positive outlet this summer. The goal is to create safe spaces for families to come outside, especially post-pandemic. My office has come up with an initiative, "40 Days to Increase the Peace" and looking to create a Youth Summer Planning Committee to tap into the government agencies, faith-based institutions, non-profit organizations, and our community partners.  The committee will be tasked with, at a minimal,  creating a calendar with 40 days of healthy activities for youth and young adults.

If you wish to volunteer or serve on the Youth Summer Planning Committee or have an initiative added to the calendar, please send an email to Yukia Hugee-Wilson at yhugee@dccouncil.us no later than Friday, May 7th.

Regards,

Trayon White, Sr.

This week, DC Health launched DC MyIR, a web-based portal that gives District residents secure, easy, and free access to their official COVID-19 vaccination records. The portal allows users to view and print official copies of their vaccination records, and their dependents’ records, at any time.

Using a simple registration process, DC MyIR allows users to create and activate an account and utilizes a 2-step verification process to match the registration information to locate an exact match in the immunization registry. Users can also add dependents under the age of 18 to their DC MyIR account. Once a registered account is verified, vaccination records will be available for users to view and print on demand. The certified vaccination records provided by the portal will be accepted by places that require proof of immunization.

DC MyIR is HIPPA-compliant and records are only available to authorized users. For more information, including what to do if you cannot see your records, go HERE.

The troubled United Medical Center is set to close in 2023 to make way for a new facility at St. Elizabeths campus. In the meantime, UMC remains the only hospital in Ward 8, and it faces an uncertain future.

The D.C. Council rejected a proposal last week that would increase the subsidies the city spends to keep the hospital afloat. Without it, the hospital’s management is likely to revert to a fiscal management board.

Other councilmembers argued that the hospital needed money to operate now.

“I do know a level of health disparities … east of the Anacostia River … we shouldn’t be in a place to decide if we’re going to do [help the hospital], but how we’re going to do it,” Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White said, adding doing so should include accountability measures.
