Word from the President
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to another issue of the Europlanet newsletter, which reveals just how much work we continue to do despite the circumstances we are still working under. Sadly there still appears to be little opportunity for face-to-face meetings and life in the ‘virtual world’ will have to continue a bit longer. EPSC2021, though virtual, is developing well with many exciting sessions – so please submit those abstracts! Registration will open on 1 July with an early-bird rate and reduced fees for Europlanet Society members – so please join the Society.
We can also look forward to new funding opportunities with the forthcoming launch of the Horizon Europe programme. Europlanet is in dialogue with fellow space projects and other research infrastructures so we can discuss programmes with the European Commission. Look out for updates and more information in future newsletters.

Asteroid Photometry – Europlanet Virtual Summer School
16-27 August 2021
Europlanet 2024 RI is pleased to announce the virtual summer school Asteroid Photometry that will take place virtually between 16-27 August 2021. The school, hosted by Vilnius University (Lithuania) and A. Mickiewicz University (Poland), offers participants a thorough, multidisciplinary introduction into the ground-based and space observations of asteroids.

Telescope network open call
The Call for Observations for the Europlanet Telescope Network is a rolling call to which you can submit your proposal at any time. Decisions on the funding of any proposal should be made within just two months of submission. After the large success of the First Geology and Planetary Mapping Winter School that was held virtually 1-5 February 2021, the recorded materials are now freely available on the GMAP website. You only need an account on this website to access them.

Happening this week!
The first EANA online school to learn about hydrothermal systems from interdisciplinary perspectives at the interfaces of geology, biology and chemistry is taking place from 17–21 May 2021. Know more here>>

Virtual Workshop on the use of the Europlanet Telescope Network for amateur astronomers
On 15 May, 70 people from Spain, Portugal, France and also from Latin America actively participated in a virtual workshop on the Europlanet Telescope Network (ETN) and how amateur astronomers can access the network. The workshop was jointly organised by the Europlanet 2024 RI, the Europlanet Society Regional Hub of Spain and Portugal, the Spanish Astronomy Society (SEA) and the Federation of Astronomical Associations of Spain (FAAE) with the additional collaboration of Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.

First Virtual Workshop on Fireball Databases and Machine Learning
11-12 June 2021
Europlanet 2024 RI is supporting a series of four workshops to bring together different networks of fireballs observers as well as machine learning experts over the next two years. This series aims to culminate with the development of a common data format and/or common entry point to the observational data of the different fireballs networks, and machine learning science cases for meteor observations.

EPSC2021 – Call for Abstracts

The Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC2021), the annual meeting of the Europlanet Society, will take place from 13-24 September 2021 as a virtual conference. The entire range of planetary sciences is covered through an extensive mix of oral and poster sessions, workshops and panel discussions. The event is a unique space for networking and exchange of experiences.
The abstract submission deadline is 26 May 2021,13:00 CEST. This is a strict deadline and will not be extended.

Spring 2021 is a season of ‘supermoons’, with the Full Moon in May coinciding within 10% of the closest lunar orbital distance to Earth. We would like to invite you to join the SuperLuna! Italian livestream, aired on 26 May on EduINAF’s main social channels from 9.30pm to 11pm (CEST).
You can also participate in the SuperLuna! Observing Challenge by uploading your pictures to this Flickr group and posting them on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #SuperLuna. You may also submit your pictures via the form here.

Mars Collection of Educational Resources
Now available online
Europlanet 2024 RI has produced a set of school resources exploring the possibilities of life on the Red Planet. The resources link areas of the curriculum with research into past and present conditions on Mars and how we can study these conditions via planetary field analogue sites here on Earth.
The Mars Collection of educational resources, which includes teaching packs, video demonstrations and information on planetary analogues, is now available online.

EPSC 2020 Planetary Science Wiki Edit-a-thon

The EPSC2020 Planetary Science Wiki Edit-a-thon, organised by the Diversity Committee of the Europlanet Society in collaboration with Women in Red and WikiDonne, aims to highlight diversity within the planetary science community. The Edit-a-thon has continued since EPSC2020, with new and translated Wikipedia profiles of planetary scientists continuing to be added.
This month, we are sharing the story of Adriana Ocampo, whose profile is now available in French, thanks to the Edit-a-thon participants.
Adriana Ocampo, born in 1955, is a Colombian planetary geologist and a Science Program Manager at NASA Headquarters. During high school and graduate studies, she worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she served as the science coordinator for many planetary missions (Viking, Mars Observer, Voyager, Galileo, etc). She was the first to recognise, using satellite images, that a ring of cenotes or sinkholes, is the only surface impression of the buried Chicxulub crater. This research contributed significantly to the understanding of this impact crater.

In this groundbreaking study, scientists detect small pockets of carbon dioxide-rich liquid water in a meteorite dating from the early Solar System. This research provides key evidence for the dynamics of the Solar System's formation.
