<<Salutation>>,

How many times have we all heard "Data is the new oil"? And while data might be way easier to collect than it is to find oil, it is much more difficult to draw value from it. A new collaboration helps to ease many of the challenges of uniting data from different sources, thus making its value more accessible.

Breaking ground in Calgary

The $500m expansion of BMO Centre in Calgary is progressing: The ground-breaking for the facility on Stampede Park has taken place on April 29, 2021. The preconstruction phases have rolled out smoothly over the past 24 months. The Calgary Stampede and Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) chose the design team in Spring 2019 and revealed the facility's design in June 2020, followed by construction of Hall F through the summer of last year. Crews have worked to prepare the site with extensive utilities upgrades and demolition work over the past year, readying the convention centre for its 560,000 square foot expansion. "The BMO Centre expansion will provide state-of-the-art facilities for community engagement and economic benefit through job creation and tourism", says Steve McDonough, president and chairman of the Calgary Stampede. "The expansion will anchor Calgary on the international map as a leading convention host, attracting larger conventions and meetings to our province". Designed by leading firms Stantec/Populous/S2 Architecture, the building's design will transform the Calgary skyline. The new venue will be significantly larger than the existing BMO Centre, offering double the rentable space. When it opens in 2024, the BMO Centre will be the largest convention facility in western Canada, elevating Calgary into the top tier of the competitive international meetings and conventions market. UECO opens in Ulsan

Korea unveiled its newest convention centre, Ulsan Exhibition and Convention Center (UECO), on April 29, 2021. UECO is the 17th convention centre in Korea, anticipated to turn the south-eastern Metropolitan City of Ulsan into the next hub for the Korean MICE industry. Located between Gyeongju and Busan, Ulsan is Korea's eighth largest city with a population of over 1.1 million, recognised as the industrial powerhouse of South Korea, home to the largest automobile assembly plant and shipyard. As one of Korea's major cities, construction of an exhibition and convention centre in the area was first promoted back in 2000, but halted due to controversy over budget and scale. The project finally saw light with the opening of KTX Ulsan Station in 2010, and construction officially began in 2017. With an exterior design inspired by the whale-shaped carving on the Bangudae petroglyph (National Treasure No. 285) in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, one of the city's main landmarks, UECO boasts a total area of 43,000 m2, with three floors above ground and one floor underground. On the first floor is the Exhibition Hall with a total area of 8,000 m2, divisible into four separate halls or combined into larger halls depending on the size of the event. The Convention Hall is located on the third floor, divisible into three halls or able to be combined into larger spaces, with a total of 1,336 m2. A total of 12 meeting rooms in varying sizes are located throughout the centre as well, to accommodate smaller meetings. (kf)

Bauma moves to autumn slot in 2022

Setup next summer: The 33rd edition of the world's leading trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment, better known as Bauma, in 2022 moves from spring (April 4 to 10) to the autumn. So, excavators and other construction equipment will be on show again at the Messe München venue from October 24 to 30, 2022. Especially global exhibitors, who expect customers from all over the world to attend Bauma and who therefore make heavy investments in stand construction, logistics and hotel capacity, advocated a new schedule. Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO of Messe München, defended the decision: "we had to make it now, before the exhibitors start planning their participation in the trade show and make corresponding investments." The core of bauma 2022 will be the face-to-face event, augmented and expanded by digital offerings. (ch)

Koelnmesse mobilises for mobility

Koelnmesse is launching a new format: Polismobility – Moving Cities. The first edition is planned for next year, from May 18 to 21, 2022. With this new event, Koelnmesse and the city of Cologne want to focus on solutions for "mobility in cities in the future". The event wants to highlight cross-industry urban mobility in all its diversity and focus on solutions rather than purely on products, and place the emphasis on challenges for cities. The concept is based on the triad, Exhibition, Exchange and Experience. It anchors the theme urban mobility both at the exhibition grounds as well as directly in the city. At the same time, the global mobility community is to find its home all year round on a digital content and event platform. This platform, which will be continually updated with relevant contents, virtual events and numerous opportunities for networking from the debut event in 2022 and thereafter, is to make this possible. The magazine on the polisMOBILITY website is already regularly offering news and exciting articles on the urban mobility cosmos. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia joins Koelnmesse in partnering this event. A central figure in the development of the event is project partner Johannes Busmann, who with the Polis Convention and the Polis Magazine is contributing expertise in the area of urban development. Further cooperation partners of Koelnmesse are the ZVEI (German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association), and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), which also acts as scientific advisor to Polismobility. Good to Know

Virtual Standard Export Format launched

A working group of event organisers and technology platforms has announced Virtual Standard Export Format (VSef), a universal format for virtual and hybrid event data. The data standard has been developed collaboratively by a cross-industry working group. Founding members include ten global event organisers and leading event tech platform partners, who have come together to create a shared industry-wide standard. VSef is run on a not-for-profit basis, open to all event organisers, and any platform can choose to adopt the standards. Dr. Barış Onay, chair of the VSef working group, remarked; "The silver-lining in the pivot to digital has been the data-rich environment we organisers now find ourselves in. But, we have a huge standardisation job at hand if we're to benefit from this newly found trove of data. VSef has been designed to solve this problem, to provide an open source standard. I for one am looking forward to receiving data from different platforms in one format!" VSef was launched and is steered by Explori, the leading insights provider for the events industry. Explori CEO, Mark Brewster, adds, "Our research suggests organisers use, on average, four different event technology platforms. The data produced by these platforms often looks very different from one provider to the next. Three-quarters of organisers told us they found it challenging to integrate data from virtual platforms into other systems. These challenges are barriers to learning, progress and business intelligence. That is why we brought together a working group to create a universal data format that enables events to consume consistent data regardless of which platforms they are working with". The initiative has already received support from industry bodies and communities. UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, is the founding association partner and set to adopt and advocate the standards. Anbu Varathan, UFI president, explained; "The group of companies that came together to work on VSef represents a great cross-section of the UFI membership. As the global trade association for our sector, we know about the importance of unified and aligned data sets, and we are working to promote globally accepted metrics and terminologies. We recommend that every business events association joins us in supporting and promoting VSef to their members as a collaborative way forward for our industry." (kf)
