Adelaide's Coastal Reptiles

The expert talk at this Saturday's General Meeting will be on Coastal Reptiles of Adelaide, presented by the renowned herpetologist Peter Matejcic.  Peter has conducted research on the lizards of the Wara Wayingga Tennyson Dunes in particular and has some amazing insights to share about our scaly friends.

The meeting itself will be quite short, followed by Peter's presentation.  It will be held on Saturday 8th May, 2-3:30pm at the Bower Cottages Community Centre, 200 Bower Rd Semaphore Park, located here.  Parking can be accessed via Bartley Tce and Kingfisher Dr.

The meeting and presentation is open to all, so invite your friends and family.

It promises to be a fantastic afternoon.  I look forward to seeing you all there.

Tennyson Dunes Workdays in May

This is a reminder that our next Tennyson Dunes Group workday will be this Thursday 6th May, 10am-12pm, at the Valerie Wales Community Coastal Nursery on Atkin St, Henley Beach.  This will be followed by another on Sunday 16th May, 10am-12pm, at the northern car park of the Wara Wayingga Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve, located here.

On Thursday, we will continue our propagation efforts, and on the Sunday we'll be constructing the northern Native Bee BnB so lots of fun for the whole family.

Remember to bring sun protection, drinking water, enclosed shoes, gardening gloves and a dust mask if you come to the nursery workday.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Threatened Hoodies at Tennyson

The keen eyed of you may have noticed several Hooded Plovers on the beach in front of the Wara Wayingga Tennyson Dunes Conservation Reserve.

There is currently a group of 7-15 of these rare birds overwintering here, including adults and juveniles from last year's clutch.  When breeding season approaches in the summer, they will move back south to their favourite breeding beaches where they nest in a small scrape at the back of the beach, just above high tide.

These birds on our beach can look after themselves, however when nesting the eggs and chicks are vulnerable to dogs, walkers and cars on the beach, so be sure to observe plover signage and watch where you step.

More information on Hoodies can be found here.

Below is a recent photo taken by one of our volunteers of the Hoodies on our beach.  Thanks for sharing, Constanze.
