🗞️Diversity and inclusion news🗞️
👀Glassdoor's report👀

Workplace review site Glassdoor released a report on America’s Workplace Diversity Crisis👀

Perhaps the most interesting finding was
  • We find strong evidence that workers from different racial and ethnic groups disagree about the current state of workplace D&I at their companies. Overall, Black or African American workers report an average D&I rating of 3.49 out of 5 stars, well below the average of 3.73 stars across all workers. By contrast, Asian workers report above-average D&I ratings of 3.98 stars, while Hispanic/Latinx workers report ratings of 3.80 stars.
Averages do skew pockets of discontent too, so the picture may be more nuanced🤔

The report is quite comprehensive, so if you want to take a read, here is the link

💡Racist Metadata💡

The adult entertainment industry is well regarded as one of the drivers of the internet. Pandemic success stories such as only fans saw revenues grew by 553% year-on-year to £281m ($391.4m)📈

Nonetheless Wired did an interesting report that found Adult actors "of colour" on some of the most trafficked adult sites on the internet are rarely categorized under actors' names but instead rather outdated, nonspecific racialized categories😯

Why does this matter? Well, it depersonalizes folks based on the color of their skin over any of their "talents". This in theory harms those specific actors with search queries distorted and folks less likely to find "them" compared to folks from other ethnic backgrounds.😨

Wired has a good write up here (not linking to NSFW content)😅
🧠Things that make you go hmmm🧠
👀Tesla👀

Tesla announced its earnings results last week🤑

Largely lots of big tech did well, exceeding expectations and tesla was one of them, however, its earnings had a curious note. The company bought $1.5bn of Bitcoin during the first quarter, but then cut its position by 10%, which contributed $101m to its revenues. Profits for the first three months of the year were $438m (£315m), up from $16m last year fueled largely by environmental credits and that transaction👀

Whilst investors may be in on the ride (Telsa has never been the most conventional company), it will raise some eyebrows after all as the BBC noted "Investors could well argue that if they wanted to have exposure to Bitcoin they would have bought some themselves and don't need Tesla to do it for them.🤣 Nonetheless, if you did want exposure you'd rather have Elon on your side, than not 😅

So what?: Consider this; A company could be worrying that they may not hit their earning results forecasts. They could buy a non-regulated crypto asset, and the CEO could tweet, pushing up its price. It could then sell the asset for a profit, delivering a financial return to distort its earnings results. That appears dodgy no? Well, who's stopping it right now, because that's in essence what the DTNS show asserted Telsa just did👀

🍎Apple antitrust🍎

The European Commission has issued a formal ‘statement of objections’ against Apple, largely following on from Spotify's accusations that Apple’s app store rules distort competition and abuse its monopoly position through its commission rate.🤑

Right now the EU is taking Apple on, in music, but as we know Apple is getting attacked from multiple sides with its case from Epic Games underway too. Apple has 12 weeks to get back to the EU in response, but either way, we don't feel this story will be done then👩🏻‍⚖️

So what?: Apple has long contended its App store is run in the most optimal way to keep users of its platform safe/secure (and conveniently make Apple lots of cash). Others see it as monopoly power at its worst. Microsoft used to once contend a similar thing about Internet Explorer, but this time Apple would contend is different. We're not so sure, but it could have huge ramifications for a company that has recently just doubled its profits

🎙The cost of being in the office🎙

Google saves about $1bn a year from its folks not being in the office.🏢

Anyway, they say they will still invest in real estate and have a hybrid model going forward, but very much intend for people to return to the offices🤣

So what?: Twitter, and somewhat but less so Facebook have announced and in the latter's case toyed with the idea of never returning to the office. The savings are very apparent, but we'd like to understand if there are any quantitative measures on the productivity consequences or some sort of measure on the missed serendipity from not connecting with your colleagues in person🤔

🎙An update on basecamp🎙

We reported on it last week, well since that memo saying employees should leave politics at home, a 1/3 of the companies employees have decided to chuck it in and find somewhere else to work👋🏾

The founders dug their heels in, with this statement, and it all "blew up" at an all-hands after there was no unequivocal support to denounce the ideas of "White supremacy"🥴

So what?: Basecamp will no doubt attract folks to work there, however they are likely to be a group of people who support the companies stance and don't offer divergent thought to that. We think it will be hard to keep the culture from going in a certain undesirable direction as a result.🥱 Afterall we believe diversity of thought at work is good even if political, (is anything truly apolitical anyway😅)

📉Meme girl📉

Yep this meme of Zoë Roth, hit the internet over 13 years ago. Now aged 21 she, has sold the original photograph for $473,000 (£341,000) (180 Ethereum) as an NFT to a collector called @3FMusic.

BBC covers the story and wider market developments here

So what?: What can you sell as an NFT?
