Dear Colleague,

Now that restrictions are lifting I hope this has brought some welcomed relief! Unfortunately we are not yet at the stage where we can welcome prospective students back on campus, but we can bring you news of our next Virtual Open Day Festival, on Saturday 5 June 1-5pm.

The Virtual Open Day Festival will bring Queen’s right into your students home. They will get access to live subject talks, mini lectures and Q&A’s with real students, academics and our support services. They will also get the chance to explore our campus and student community, which will enable them to make informed choices. All the information will be available on demand after the event so that it is accessible at all times.

How to Register

We require all attendees to register individually to gain access to event.

We are adding to the schedule every day and will provide registrants with the final agenda closer to the event to enable them to plan their day.

I would appreciate if you could share this information with your students and parents/guardians through any communication platforms used within your school.

We know the last year has been difficult, and you just want the best for your pupils. That's why we have created this teacher checklist to help you advise your pupils how to get the most out of our Virtual Open Day Festival.

The Partition of Ireland: Causes and Consequences
The Partition of Ireland: Causes and Consequences, is a new series of weekly public talks, supported by the UK Government and Irish Government, and by the Royal Irish Academy and the British Academy. This series has been organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the Partition of Ireland, and new talks will be released every Monday at 12pm.

Each talk has been developed with broadcast support from the BBC, and can be accessed on our website.

In each online talk a leading academic will address a major theme. Subjects covered in the series include the complex origins and legacies of partition, the experience of minorities, the Irish border in literature, and class-based and gender-based dimensions.

Please share this with any pupils who you feel would be interested.

Medicine at Queen’s Open Day
Friday 21 May or Wednesday 26 May

We are pleased to advise that the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Science will once again be running our very successful virtual Medicine at Queen’s Open Day. Numbers are limited and we will therefore be running 2 events. Both events will have the same format – students do not need to attend both. These days are for any students just finishing their AS level year and who are interested in applying for medicine at any university.

The day will include:
•             Talks from doctors in specialities often not accepting pupils to work experience
•             An overview of the Medicine course at Queen’s
•             Demonstration of clinical skills
•             Meet students already on the course
•             Information about admissions to medicine.

*Please note students can register for their preferred  date, however depending on numbers you may be asked to attend the event on the date you did not register for.

A detailed programme and link will be forwarded in the week prior to the meeting.

Please encourage any students who may be interested in studying Medicine to avail of this opportunity.

Broadcast Production: Lights, Camera, Action!

The pandemic has made us rethink how we work in a wide variety of industries, and this has certainly been the case in the media and broadcast sphere. At Queen's, our Broadcast Production course has adapted to deliver a mixture of in-person and online teaching, with continuing access to equipment and technical support for students whilst maintaining health and safety protocols.

This semester, our Level 2 students are producing their own TV shows with multi-camera setups in our studios on campus.  One of the shows 'C+' highlights the people of Belfast making a positive difference in their community during lockdown. Inspiring stuff!

Keep up with our student activities and catch their programmes at the end of this semester on Instagram and Facebook
