Celebrating Asian American and Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

May is Asian American and Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month so today's Drop celebrates and explores the AANHPI community!

May is significant to the AANHPI community for two reasons. On May 7, 1843, the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the United States. More than 20 years later, on May 10, 1869, with the involvement of more than 20,000 Chinese workers, the first transcontinental railroad was completed.  The month-long celebration is an opportunity to acknowledge the historic achievements of Asian Americans and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) and to highlight their undeniable impacts on American history.

AANHPI encompasses more than 50 ethnic or linguistic communities that make the country more vibrant through the diversity of cultures, languages, and religions. Through their hard work and sacrifice in the United States, this community helped build a broad range of infrastructure, advanced science, technology, and engineering, broadened the arts and humanities, and contributed to securing freedom and democracy, both at home and abroad. Learn more about AANHPI Heritage Month from this presidential proclamation or this page from NRCS.
