Strengthening our Evidence Toolkit: Transformative research and evaluation strategies to center survivors and advance social justice

Research and evaluation can be powerful tools for community-based programs in the gender-based violence (GBV) field. Systematic inquiry can help advocates examine how well their programs are working, identify emerging issues affecting their communities, and better understand survivors’ strengths and needs. However, these tools also have a long history of being used to harm marginalized communities, overburden GBV staff and organizations, and reproduce systemic inequities.

Given this history, how can community-based programs conduct research and evaluation in ways that avoid replicating harms and instead center survivors and advance social justice? This webinar will explore key strategies to help achieve these goals, such as expanding our definitions of evidence and employing trauma-informed, language justice, and participatory approaches. The presenters are researchers with experience in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and culturally responsive and equitable evaluation (CREE). The webinar aims to provide participants with concrete strategies and considerations for how to integrate more equity and justice-focused approaches in their GBV research and evaluation.

La investigación y la evaluación pueden ser herramientas poderosas para los programas comunitarios en el campo de la violencia de género (VG). La investigación sistemática puede ayudar a los defensores a examinar qué tan bien están funcionando sus programas, identificar problemas emergentes que afectan a sus comunidades y comprender mejor las fortalezas y necesidades de los sobrevivientes.
