Bribir-Štale:
medieval cementery
January 19th untill April 19th 2021
Rescue archaeological excavations at the site Štale within Bribir town in the Vinodol valley (Primorje-Gorski Kotar County) were carried out by the Institute of Archaeology from January to April 2021. Concomitant with works for the setup of a parking space the excavations, financed by the Vinodol Municipality and conducted on an area of 150 m2, unearthed around one hundred graves. The sheer density of inhumations, which occupy half of the afore-mentioned area, just as recovered finds, indicate long lasting sepulchral use of the Štale area, whose archaeological potential is known since the mid-20th c. Preliminary analysis of finds, mostly comprising jewellery and deceased's personal items, indicates a period of use of the grave yard from roughly the 10th to the 12th/13th c. Upcoming anthropological and other interdisciplinary analyses will shed more light on the deceased, but also on the numerous organic finds also recovered from the graves.
Excavations were led by A. Konestra, PhD, with the participation of numerous colleagues from the Institute of Archaeology, external collaborators and students. Azimut d.o.o. performed geodetic measurements, while "Obrt Nedeljko" provided mechanical excavation services. Excavations sprung the interest of various media, but also of the local population, who we thank for their collaboration and useful information.
