Kansas State KidWind Challenge Winners!

The Kansas KidWind Challenge looked a little (ok, a lot!) different this year. We want to send out a massive virtual "thank you" to our KidWind coaches and teachers, students, and judges. Also, we'd like to give a special shout out to the Kansas Energy Program's Yvonne Cook, who headed up this endeavor! Going virtual meant rethinking every part of the Challenge, updating documents for a virtual setting, creating new methods for evaluation, and lots and lots of communication. Now, without further ado, here are our 2021 Kansas State KidWind Challenge winners!

4th-8th grade Division

  • 1st place – BTU Crew – Dighton Middle School, USD 482
    • Coach: Tatum Vogel
    • Student Team Members: Westin Johnson, Charlie Vogel, Hank Davis, and Cordell Davis
  • 2nd place – Team 2 – Beloit Junior-Senior High School, USD 273
    • Coach: Christie Fouts
    • Student Team Members: Charlie Burke, Lundyn Knight, and Mckenna Channell

9th-12th grade Division

  • 1st place – Hawkmores – Wheatland High School, USD 292
    • Coach: Diane Wetter
    • Student Team Members: Kerri Heier, Halle Habiger, and Jett Vincent
  • 2nd place – Just Levi – Paola Middle School, USD 368
    • Coach: Shari Hudgeons
    • Student Team Members: Emma Haley, Hazel Downum, and Zander Holdsworth

We also want to recognize the Wind Jammers – Iola High School, USD 257. This is the first year for this school (teacher and students) to participate in the KidWind Challenge. Out of the twelve teams that advanced to the state level, the Wind Jammers had the highest improvement percentage going from the score earned in the Regional KidWind Challenge to the State KidWind Challenge.

We would like to congratulate all these teams, who will be invited to represent the Kansas KidWind teams in the virtual National KidWind event this year!

2021 Energy Haiku Contest

Energy-themed haikus were received from all over the U.S. One even came from the Phillipines! Here are the two we received from Kansas:

Rolling Blackouts Hit Kansas
Is This The New Norm?

Make sure to be thinking of energy-related haikus for 2022!
