Burrfish & Their Buddies

Did you know there is more than one species of burrfish? During this virtual event, participants will learn about burrfish on exhibit at the UGA Aquarium, including how this animal’s unique body shape and behavior helps it survive. As a bonus, you’ll also meet other fish that use odd defensive strategies to survive and thrive. After visiting the tanks, marine educators will demonstrate a burrfish craft that you can do at home.

Sing-Fly-Soar on World Migratory Bird Day

Join us in celebrating World Migratory Bird Day! Every spring and fall shorebirds migrate through and to the Georgia coast to reach their breeding and feeding grounds. In this interactive webinar, participants will learn how to identify a few of these charismatic feathered visitors and explain how Georgia’s coast plays a role in their incredible migration routes.

Horseshoe Crab Encounters

May 10 & 12 

Every spring horseshoe crabs congregate on beaches along the east coast to lay their eggs. These spawning events attract migratory shorebirds that utilize the horseshoe crab eggs to fuel their annual flight to nesting grounds in the Arctic. Join us for an excursion by boat to experience this unique, seasonal phenomenon along the Georgia coast. Children 10 years or older are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

Restoring Our Wetlands

DYK  that roughly 80,000 acres of wetlands are lost each year in the United States? Thankfully, there’s a nationwide effort to restore and preserve wetlands for habitat and recreation. Join us for a virtual program about different types of wetlands, their benefits and how you can help restore and preserve some of nature’s most valuable resources.

Wassaw Island Beach Exploration

May 19

Spend time with marine educators exploring the North end of Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge. We’ll anchor skiffs along the shoreline, hike along the northern part of the island looking for seashells before sampling the surf for cool marine animals using a seine net. Children 10 years or older are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

2021 Coastal Research Symposium

May 19-21

The virtual 2021 Coastal research Symposium, co-hosted by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Resources Division, will include presentations from academics, resource managers, conservationists and students across the state who are studying Georgia's coastal and marine environments. 

The symposium is designed to facilitate interactions between the academic community and coastal stakeholders through sessions focused on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, resilient communities and healthy coastal ecosystems. Panel discussions on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion will feature academic researchers, students, federal employees and early-career scientists. The deadline to register is May 10.

Drought-Tolerant Coastal Landscapes for Water Conservation

Learn how to landscape your home or business with beautiful, drought-tolerant plants while effectively conserving our most precious natural resource – water! EcoScapes Sustainable Land Use Program Manager Keren Giovengo will provide information on why we need to address water conservation and how to create beautiful, native landscapes that need little or no water beyond what our natural climate provides.
