Implementing Changes and
Upholding Rights – It Takes Leadership
It is time for change, and the Sector is part of the solution. The recent release of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety Final Report has highlighted too many failures of the system and too many instances where people were denied their right to access and receive quality Aged Care.

This article will consider the multiple layers in which change needs to happen and provide ideas on how the Sector can also drive change. It will do so by using a human-rights framework, with a particular focus on leadership.

COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout 
Phase 1b of the vaccination program is underway and the Department of Health provides daily updates on its progress here. Additionally, a webpage with accurate, evidence-based answers to common questions about the vaccine can be accessed at COVID-19 vaccines ⁠–⁠ Is it true?

Grant Opportunities 
Mosman Council’s Community Grants Program 2021/22 now open
The grants are for not-for-profit community groups and organisations for projects that benefit the Mosman community. Further information and the online application form is here. Applications close on 11 June 2021.

Australian Government
A dozen grant opportunities in relation to COVID-19 related expenditures, Aged Care Workforce Retention and Support, Infrastructure and Equipment, disability support for Older Australians and Improved Payment Administration Transitional Support are available for Home Care and/or CHSP providers. These can be accessed here.
Survey - Aged Care Communication
The Department of Health is seeking feedback from Aged Care providers and workers on its digital communication for the Sector. The survey is anonymous and should take between 2-5 min to complete. It will be open until 12 noon (AEST) on Thursday 6 May 2021. The survey can be accessed here.

Seasons for Growth Group at Mosman
Every Tuesday, 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Seasons for Growth is an innovative education program which explores the effects of change, loss and grief. A trained ‘Companion’ facilitates the seminar or small group program, in which participants explore feelings, memories, loss and grief in a safe and creative way.
Adult Group (18+ years) – who live, work or study on the Lower North Shore or Northern Beaches are welcome to join (further eligibility applies –contact Lifeline). Download the flyer here for more information.
Webinar: Improved Payment Arrangements for Home Care
Phase 2

Friday 7 May, 10am - 12pm

The Improved Payment Arrangement measure was introduced in February 2021 and moves the responsibility for holding care recipients’ unspent funds from the provider to the Government. The Department of Health will be holding a webinar to discuss Phase 2 of the IPA (to commence in September 2021) for providers. Click here to register. A Factsheet can be downloaded here.
Workshop: Accidental Counsellor
Monday 17 May, 9.30am - 3.00pm
Organised by the Ku-ring-gai Council, this face-to-face workshop will provide CHSP workers with tools and skills to manage strong emotional content. The training will be experiential and focus on understanding personal boundaries.

Diversity Training Series
The Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing is running a series of new webinars as part of its 2021 Diversity Training Series. The webinars cover a range of topics and support participants to provide consumer-centred care that addresses the diversity of Aged Care recipients. The Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement (ACGB) will provide grief and loss support for those living, working and caring in the Aged Care Sector, who have been impacted by COVID-19.

“We saw the best in people” Lessons Learned by Aged Care Providers experiencing outbreaks of COVID-19 - Report
The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has released a report that reflects the experiences of 34 Victorian providers who experienced a COVID-19 outbreak in their services in the second part of 2020. They share important lessons in relation to leadership and overall service preparedness in cases of outbreaks and emergency situations. The report can be accessed here.
