On Sunday 30th May, 2021, Cherrybrook Uniting Church will be celebrating the 175th anniversary of The Wesleyan Chapel in their 9.30am worship service. The Wesleyan Chapel opened for worship services on the current Cherrybrook site in 1846, a mere 175 years ago!
The original European settlers in the area were mostly Wesleyans or Methodists and in 1845 they built a Wesleyan chapel and established a burial ground on New Line Road. The chapel is now the CherrybrookUnitingChurch Hall, and is one of the few reminders of the past of Cherrybrook and West Pennant Hills.
The land upon which the church and facilities are located was donated by John and Mary Pogson who were land owners in the area. They purchased 45 acres of land in the area of New Line and Gumnut Roads, and they later bought further land along Gumnut Road, and on Purchase Road. The stone for the beautiful building was carted from Pogson’s land in Purchase Road. The stone building, originally 30 foot long and 18 foot wide, was officially opened in February 1846.
Consistent with the tradition of English Country Churches, the cemetery was opened on the vacant land that surrounds the original chapel. Whilst official records of burials only commenced in 1849, there is evidence that burials actually commenced in 1846.
Paul Bryan says "We plan to celebrate this significant milestone in our 9.30am worship service on Sunday 30th May 2021, followed by morning tea. Anyone who is interested is invited to attend".
We will bring you the full story of these celebrations in an upcoming newsletter.
