Australian Under 21 Squad

Congratulations and good luck to Brad Marais, Craig Marais and Trent Symss.  They headed off on Sunday  as part of the Burras Squad Camp. Burras are the under 21 Australian men's team. The World Cup is later in the year and the camp is part of the selection process.

For those that missed it, Josie Lawton, Emily Hamilton-Smith and Olivia Downes were also selected as part of the Under 21 Australian Squad. They participated in the camp earlier in the year.

Victorian Under 21 Team & Squad

Hockey Victoria announced the Under 21 men team and women's squad to play in the Australian Championships in July.  What a great achievement  five men and five women from Southern United. To add to that achievement, all but three, qualify for under 21 next year.

Premier League

The premier league season is a 19 round season, with 16 teams in the competition. Each club plays all clubs once, and then at the end of the season plays four clubs for a second time. Those four clubs are selected from across the previous years ladder ideally one from position 1-4 in previous year, another position 5-8 in previous year, and so on.

At the end of round 4 our teams have now played all clubs that they will play twice.  Our premier league men, women and women reserves all have four wins from those four rounds. A huge start to the season with the women defeating Hawthorn who have taken home the women's premiership cup home four times in the past five seasons.
Men's Premier League - Win

The men managed to record a 4-2 win against a dogged Hawthorn team that was desperate for points.
The first quarter saw Hawthorn start strongly and create a myriad of chances. However, it was Southern that scored first through Ally Hart after a nice passing movement involving Will Carruthers, Matt L’Hullier and Trent Symms. Hawthorn hit back straight away and the teams went into the first break deadlocked.
Southern took control of the second and third quarters. A brilliant goal to in form striker Carlin Walker and a double to Pim Okhuizen saw the guys lead 4-1 going into the last quarter.
Hawthorn scored a consolation goal late in the game.
Great to see young gun Ted Harvey make his Premier League debut and put in a solid performance.

How is this team work and goal: Pass from Waseem to Carlin, and then over the goal keeper

Women's Premier League - Win

What a day.  Our premier league women took on Hawthorn at Hawthorn. The Hawthorn women's team have been premiers four of the last five years.

I have vivid memories of the 2016 WPL game against Hawthorn where the Southern scoreboard was playing up, and the score went to 0-10 and we couldn't bring it back to 0-9 The TO kindly said, don't worry, it will be correct soon. Southern women were beaten 2-13.

The strength of juniors coming through over the past five years has led to the win.  With LJ and Ash at 23 being the two "old" members of the team, the growing youth of our team prevailed.

A great result girls.
Men's Premier League Reserves - Win

Returning to the Hawthorn Malvern Hockey Centre for the 2nd time in two weeks, the MPLR team was eager to come away with a better result after losing to TEM two weekends ago.

The first quarter saw two short corner opportunities converted by Richard Brougham and Shane Campbell respectively. Broughham’s low drag flick was no match for the Hawthorn keeper. Similarly, the layoff left to Campbell on a latter short corner had the goal keeper out of position - Campbell made no mistake.

Continuing to have much of the play in the second quarter, one opportunity was converted by Dom Eddy who roofed a tomahawk from close range.

The third quarter unfortunately was a poor display with the team struggling to hold possession and resorting to wave hockey.

The final quarter saw a return to form and some of the best hockey the team has played for the year so far. Dom Eddy added another goal to his tally while Lachlan Finlayson also joined the scoresheet. After receiving the ball on the 25, beating a number of players, Finlayson fired a tomahawk towards the roof of the net that was saved by the Hawthorn keeper. Following up the initial shot, a composed and calm Finlayson perfectly placed the second shot in the bottom left corner (his effort honing his golf swing is paying dividends).

At the final whistle the score was 5-0. After losses in first two games, the MPLR team is looking to take the momentum from the past two wins into their match against Footscray next week.

Women's Premier League Reserves - Win

Round 4 saw the WPLR take on Hawthorn in a top of the table clash. The game lived up to expectations with a high intensity contest with lots of scoring chances from both teams. The girls led for a lot of the game but couldn’t quite shake Hawthorn and had a couple of disallowed goals making it even tougher. Eventually it was comeback kid Rachel Guy sealing the game (2-1) in the last 10 minutes with an amazing tomahawk goal. Special mention to goal keeper Jaime for saving a stroke late in the game as well. Goals: Bec Mcness, Rachel Guy.

Men's Teams

Men's Pennant A - Win

It was high noon at the Spice Bowl on Saturday as Buddha’s boys shrugged off last week’s defeat to slot home four field goals to down a dangerous Hawthorn 6-3.

Reeling from a tough loss to Camberwell last week, the lads regrouped quickly and shot away to a two-goal lead within 10 minutes, thanks to short-corner conversions from Cam Paice and Buddha himself.

Just as quickly as United found its groove, the Hawks shot back with a double in quick succession, both off penalty corners and both zinging into the back of the net.

To their credit, the home side never stopped attacking, and through the speed and skill of Nick Davey, managed to create a host of chances through the midfield, which Liam Eddington and Craig Hardham gleefully converted.

This trend continued into the second half as the defence held firm and provided the platform for Eddington and Dr Dre Fernandez to boost the score line.

Sitting at 2-2, the team has a tough match next week v Footscray. Not only are the Doggies good, but the game is on a Sunday and for some reason the boys seem a bit more tired, dehydrated and prone to headaches whenever we play on Sundays 😊

Men's Pennant C - Win

Pennant C were looking to bounce back after last weeks loss as we took on a struggling Hawthorn side. A few familiar faces, Nathan Gardiner and Bill Campbell made a return to help out a side short on numbers.
Hawthorn had an opportunity to take the lead after a dubious penalty stroke call, but goal keeper Rory Thomas made an excellent save and kept the score at 0-0. From then on Southern took complete control of the game and put on 3 goals in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter.
With two goals each to Nathan Gardiner and Steve Swann the Southern team finished 4-0 winners.

Jono Boyd
Men's Pennant D - Loss

The team played Monash in a closely fought game.  We put up a good fight but could only find the back of the net once with a goal to Cai Henzell.  Some good defensive work and GK'ing by Digby Stannus kept the score line to 1-2.

Men's Pennant E - Loss

Another tough day in the office for the pennant E boys with an early start on Mother's day at Waverley.
Men's Metro B South - Win

On a sunny Sunday arvo at 2pm, Mornington had 10 players but no goalie. SUHC were up 3-0 at quarter time, so with our goalie's agreement we offered to alternate quarters with a goalie. SUHC got a bit complacent and scored three more goals in the 3rd quarter with Coxy again on our side, finishing 6-1. The Mornington captain came over after the game to personally thank us for playing the game in a great spirit.

Men's Open C Grade - Midweek - Win

Three in a row for the new competition.

Women's Teams

Women's Pennant A - Loss

Close loss to the ladies at TEM
Women's Pennant C - Loss

.Womens Pennant C took on the Brumbies at Farm road on Sunday in what was to prove a tough game. The Brumbies bought a hard, physical game and it took a while for our team to adjust to the pace. We seemed to be chasing the opposition for a large part of the first quarter but kept them scoreless thanks to a strong defensive effort and some great saves by Sal in goal. In what turned out to be a grind of a match the Brumbies managed to score in the second quarter, our girls managed a couple of good attacking runs and got away a couple of shots on goal but couldn't fine the net. With some key players missing & only one on the bench the second half was tough, our movement really slowed and we just couldn't get our game flowing. Our players never gave up & did really well to stick with it, having a couple of good chances to level up but Brumbies were too strong on the day winning 1 nil.

Women's Pennant F - Draw

WPF took to the field in true Mother's Day style with two grannies and five other mothers in the red, black and silver.
The game was Even Stevens for the first half, with some wicked defensive work by Lauren in goals. Even though we dominated the second half, we just couldn't convert.  Everybody had a crack including birthday girl Marlene and super granny Marg.
We finished 0:0.

Special thanks to Anna Martin for doubling up for us and to Kate Sleeth, who is injured, for running the interchanges.

Juniors

Under 18 South East - Draw
In a very hard fought match we drew 3 all with St Bedes, who are favourites for the flag! Thanks to all the players and Coach! Especially the 3 fill in players who helped out - Aki, Erin and Rylan. Well done!

Hugh Stevenson
Under 18 Central - Win

Under 16 Boys Shield A - Loss

The Essendon boys came to Farm Rd.  And hard to believe, for quite a few after playing shield for the whole hockey life, it was their first trip south to the Spice Bowl.
Under 16 Girls Shield A - Win

Now that is a sweet win, 5-0 over Waverley. Bec McNess won the Women's Round Best on Ground   medal with a dominating display (one of many in a great team performance) and a few great goals as well.

Under 16 Boys Pennant - Win

On Friday Night, the Boys Pennant Team were faced with a determined Hawthorn who placed our defence under strong pressure early in the game.  But with fast moving attacking play managed to turn the tide in the first half and went into the break leading 3-1.  After listening to Coach Adam during half time the boys decided to turn up the wick on the game and rallied hard scoring another 3 goals in a solid Team effort.  With 5 goal scorers we ran out winners 6-1.  We hope all the Mum’s had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend!

Nando de Luca
Under 16 Girls Pennant - Win

U16 GP won 3-2 in a great game v Powerhouse. Had to contend with a few A grade players turning up for the opposition during the 1st half. They withstood the pressure and came so close to increasing the lead several times. BOG Medal went to Annabel.

Under 14 Boys Shield B - Loss

A much better performance by the boys on Friday against a strong PEGS team. They were drawing for much of the match but unfortunately ended up going down 4-2. Ed scored both goals with Xavier and Misha both having a number of shots on goal.

Under 14 Girls Pennant - Win

Team on Friday night. The girls played a really good game, displaying strong attack and defence skills against Doncaster, confident passing and resolute demeanour.

Pauline Walker
Under 12 Boys Shield A - Loss

U12 Boys Shield played at home against Waverley. The boys had considerably more of the ball but a 0-0 score line at half time. Waverley scored in the 2nd half and despite a few more opportunities for our boys (including a short corner just on the final whistle), we couldn’t get it in the net. The boys went down 0-1, but coach Chris touched on the weekly improvement he’s seeing and is confident their first win isn’t far away.

Kate Laing
Under 12 Girls Shield A - Win

Under 10 Boys Half Field - Win

U10 Boys HF 8-0 win against Mentone. Great team work again. Notable players with Michael Nicholin scoring 2 goals, Ben McNess getting his first goal and Liam celebrating a birthday. Big thanks to Kath & Alex for coaching.
Under 10 Girls Half Field - Win

SUHC faced up against Waverly at home, looking to build on a good result from last week. The girls have already started to develop their game further with better positional play, passing and overall spread across the pitch. We started strongly in the first half, with most of the play being forward. Eleonore built of her two goals from last week with a great strike in front of goal before match debutant, Kate, doubled our lead and sent us into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead. After the break Waverly looked to counter early but it was Isla who scored next for SUHC after a barrage for shots on goals, with one finally going in. Waverly then scored off a quick turnover, before we got some fresh legs injected into the rotation with Elizabeth joining the team. Isla scored again after some good passing amongst the girls up front to net her two goals for the match. A lapse in concentration, saw us let through a late goal, with the final score 4-2. Overall really pleasing to see the team effort and looking forward to building on our solid start to the year.

Masters

Women's 35B - Win

It was a slow start for the old ducks this week. We had numerous attacks on the circle, but just couldn't seem to get it together. Luckily we had Bianca and Mandi to save our butts with a couple of runaways early. We were finally rewarded with a scrappy back stick goal from Linda. Nobody was more surprised than Meaghan herself when she took a spectacular penalty corner deflection just before the half time break. Kate and Karina started the second half a blazing with a textbook 2 on 1 hockey goal proving that those old drills really do work. Kate finished the night with a hat trick and Mel slotted in one to seal the deal. End result a convincing 6:0 win over Monash.
