Plus, 5 fun facts about Cinco de Mayo and 10+ recs for where to celebrate today.

Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Here are five fun facts for ya about the holiday:

  • 📅 May 5 is NOT the same thing as the Mexican Day of Independence (that’s Sept. 16). One celebrates a small but significant battle against the French while the other marks the day in 1810 when Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called for the people of Mexico to rise up against Spanish rule, leading to a 10-year war to break from the monarchy.
  • 🇲🇽 Mexico was the underdog in the Battle of Puebla. The French army was much bigger and more prepared, or so they thought! Despite winning the battle, Mexico later lost the war and was under French reign for five more years.
  • 🎉 Cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico. And when it is, it’s usually with lots of mole sauce and a military parade in Puebla where the battle began in 1862.
  • 🍻 But the U.S. surely celebrates the day — beer sales on Cinco outweigh beer sales during the Super Bowl. It was in the 1960s and 1970s, that Cinco de Mayo gained popularity here when it became closely associated with the Chicano rights movement.
  • 🌮 Americans eat upwards of 80 million avocados on this day annually.

Shout out to UCF grad Nicole Dudenhoefer for the mini-history lesson.

If you’re looking to commemorate the occasion, Orlando is not short on tacos and Mexican food. Yelp’s got the goods on the best restaurants but I also saw specials from Black Rooster, Hunger Street, and MX Taco. Then there’s this birria taco from Perla’s Pizza, specials at Uncle Julio’s, Bartaco, Boxi Park… the list goes on, my friends.

If I was in town, you would find me at Azteca D’Oro, Tacos El Rancho, Fruta Mix, or one of these taco spots as recommended by our buds over at Tasty Chomps.

But let’s keep the conversations going and now taco bout: this restaurant revitalization fund, a new barbecue spot coming to ICON Park, the beer you didn’t know you needed, the Plaza Live’s change-up of the Front Porch Fest, and the future of Boxi Park.

I call this capture, “To all the tacos I’ve loved before.” (I hope someone else out there gets my humor.) 📸: @itsmesoto_. Thanks, @pulseofcfl for the tag! | Wanna see your photo here? Tag either #pulptown or @pulptown on Instagram to be featured as our IG of the Day!

Chew on this

Local food and drink business owners might be feeling a little relief this week. That’s because the application process for the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF) “opened” on Monday at 3 p.m.

What’s that? Let me explain. The RRF is a federal program run through the Small Business Association (SBA) that will give out $28.6 billion in tax-free grants to restaurants and other eligible businesses (like food trucks, bars, and breweries) to help them keep their lights on. The money is part of the bigger $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) from the Biden administration.

This program will provide eligible businesses with funding equal to their pandemic-related revenue loss up to $10 million per business and no more than $5 million per physical location.

This money is a grant. Meaning, unlike with the Paycheck Protection Program, it does not have to be paid back so long as the funds are used for eligible uses no later than March 11, 2023.

Who’s eligible? For the first three weeks, applications are open to anyone to apply (and you should!) but the first one to be processed and paid out will be restaurants that are majority-owned by women, veterans, and "socially and economically disadvantaged" applicants. After that, grants will be funded in the order that they’ve been approved by the SBA.

Interested? Head to the SBA’s site for a more thorough breakdown.

In yesterday’s newsletter, I showed up a little vulnerably and shared openly about my struggles with anxiety. A few of you took the time to write me back and tell me that you could relate. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for vulnerably sharing with me — your courage did not go unnoticed.

Hey, we’re all in this together, aren’t we?
